You have to let the characters go where they need to go. To do otherwise is being dishonest with them.
We can deal with what happens, or not, as readers.

The supposedly TG boy she has helped is possibly a plant or more likely is being pressured to *turn* on Melanie under the threat of trumped up charges to expel him or of outing him to the world and his parents. And the dean/department head is a sorry excuse for a friend and has let this insanity go on far too long.
And we still have the trip to the jungles to find the tribe and the reasons behind her transformation ahead of us.

P.S. I can see these idiots, not content to try and ruin her good name and career will try to rape her "Hey if you so want to be a woman lets make you a real one, bitch!" But then she could get pregnant and all the problems that would entail.
