The other day I was sufficiently bored to browse my way through a lively comment war on one of Stefani Germanotta's videos (no prizes for guessing either the song or the entrenched sides), and came across this interesting theory, which I've quoted verbatim (so spelling / grammatical errors in the quote are the commenters, not mine!):

"God created Night and Day...but between them sunset and sunrise to make the day and night more beautiful, god created male and female but between both there are gay and lesbian, transgender ect, why? to make your life colorful, god knows what he created"

Now you may / may not agree with either the concept of a deity or the commentator's specific viewpoint on the reasoning behind LGBTQI, but both the viewpoint and the implied metaphor (just as sunrise and sunset make the 24 hour day more interesting than just day and night, so LGBTQI make the gender spectrum more interesting than just male and female) are certainly interesting.

Sidenote: given the plethora of acronyms relating to gender identities / sexual preferences (LGB, LGBT, LGBTI, LGBTQI...), is there a standard 'one-size-fits-all' term? Even terms such as 'non-standard', 'alternative' or 'unconventional' as part of the construction sound a bit forced, as though the included gender identities / sexual preferences as "not normal..."

Colors

I don't know where I found this:

Suggestions for replacements for the LGBT.... acronym

Well in place of naming all the possible permutations, I think I have some possibly memorable though not necessarily flattering replacements.

My suggestions hinges on the two broad categories we are covering here, that of sexual orientation and that of gender.

Anyway, suggestion number one is: Sexual Or Gender Gifted Individuals which becomes SOGGI in short hand. Or, we can have Sexual and Gender Gifted Individuals which becomes of course SAGGI in short hand. Hmmm may be Sexual and Gender Expatriates or 'SAGE'? Gender And Sexually Spontaneous Individuals (GASSI?)

Now that I think can agree with.

My sexuality seems to wander all over the place so I jus' don' know.

That's why I only think I can agree with Moni's acronym.

By the way what am I agreeing with here?

Just what is LGBTIQMNOP? I get the LGBTI bit, I think I know what the 'Q' is but after that I'm buggered. (Metaphorically!)

It's been a long time since I called help! Somebody give it to me straight. The full meaning of LGBTIQMNOP.

In my nomenclature MNOP means 'Merchant Navy Officer's Pension'.

I'm getting totally lost now in the politics after having felt lost for decades in the sexual arena.

Ho hum, I've said my bit so it's back to Mermaid 28.

Cheers all.

Gee... Someone does not know the alphabet.

How about...

LGBTQIACDEFHJKMNOPRSUVWXYZ :)

That should cover all bases (well, all letters at least!)

Then again, S could conceivably stand for 'Straight' (another potentially dodgy term, since if something's not straight, it's bent or crooked - so yet another term that could cast anyone other than a cis-gendered XX or XY hetereosexual in a negative light).

That's the problem with labels - you either end up in an alphabet soup while trying to cover every eventuality, or you adopt a handful (no more) of broad categories that can be easily understood by the populace at large, but leave a significant minority either without a category or straddling multiples. That is particularly the case with the socially acceptable 'norm' of the binary model - i.e. XX female prefers males, XY male prefers females, everyone else (who the media [conservative/traditionalist leaning sources in particular] often portray as 'not quite right in the head')

If only more people had an understanding of the complexity of biology. With chemistry, A + B = C, full stop. With biology, A + B could equal C, D, E or F depending on the quantities mixed, temperature, pH, humidity, atmospheric pressure, 'contamination' from outside sources or the components of the experimental equipment, time of day, time of year... you get the idea :)

In other words - if your experiment doesn't go to plan - it ain't necessarily your fault :) Perhaps that's why I was attracted to it above the other sciences... plus growing and cutting up plants, breeding, anaesthetising and counting Drosophila (hoping you haven't given them too strong a dose of ether!)...

Then for some arcane reason I decided to study computers...

Ineffable

The Old Testament makes the point, several times, that God is ineffable -- indescribable in words, unknowable. It also says that He created us in His image. He is ineffable. We are in His image. Think about it, this makes sense:

We (all the people of the world, taken together) are ineffable.

Labels? We don't need no stinkin' labels!

Well, white light, once it has been sent through a prism is separated into a rainbow of colors. So I say that T.G. adds spice to life.
