Look at me
I will never pass for a perfect son,
or a perfect husband.
Can it be I’m not meant to play this part?
Now I see that if I were truly to be myself
I would break my family’s heart.
Who is this man I see,
staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection someone I don’t know?
Somehow I cannot hide
who I am, though I’ve tried.
When will my reflection show who I am inside?
So many things to tell him,
but how to make him see
the truth about my past? Impossible.
He’d turn away from me.
She’s holding back, she’s hiding,
But what, I can’t decide?
Why won’t she be the girl I know she is;
the girl I see inside?

I've said in the past,
I've mentioned in the past that Reflections is one of the most strikingly truthful songs for any TG. Even if Mulan's "crossdressing" was just so she could save her father's life, the story's the same for a lot of us, just not feeling like we fit in.
The second one was just a bit of harmless fun ;-)
This is what happens when lack of sleep meets short bursts of caffeine-fueled (or perhaps super-full moon?) creativity.

Concur, Whole Heartedly
I agree without the slightest bit of hesitation the song 'Reflections' from Mulan has a poignancy to it that touches my heart as I expect it does with many who are TG.
As to the caffeine induced spurt of creativity, if that's what it takes to produce a brilliant piece such as the one Zoe did, serve that girl a fresh round of coffee forthwith.
Well done, dear girl.

I whole-heartedly concur...
....with Nancy's concurrence. And I reluctantly but most assuredly identify with this as well. Many of us 'crossdress' as ourselves; perhaps for the sake of others. And how many of us may never feel like we fit in? More caffeine for sure! Great addition to my library. Thank you.

I'm with 'Drea
I had forgotten Mulan's song, but it is perfect. The second one is also fantastic, both funny and moving. Great job dear.

*giggle* I have to give
*giggle* I have to give credit where credit is due. You are the true mistress and Over... Overlady? Empress! Ah hah, yes, the Empress of turnabout in these things.
I would love to write a turnabout on "Ramblin' Man" (Because I do tend to ramble, often and with reckless abandon), but my poetic and songwriting skills are so lacking that I've never gotten anywhere with it. ^_^
Oh, and thanks everyone! It just always amused me how I could change a couple of words and twist that song to fit, so I finally found the courage to post my musings :-D

I agree Zoe
How many are still hiding our true self deep inside espicaly us MTF TG who can't let our female side out to the world to see. Mulan had a reasion for what she did as you said zoe it was so she could fight in the army to help save her country & her father.

Mulan is one of Disney's best films. But Japan has the edge on T.G. anime.

First and foremost!
Thanks to Zoe for creating such a moving piece. Stan? It's not about anime or films, or even Disney, for that matter. It's about feeling, as Zoe said, like you don't fit in. The part about identifying with the characters rather than sitting by as an observer. The heart connects with a story like this, as short as it may be, because it makes you believe that you could feel and think and do exactly like her. Or even be her.
Fits well
I just checked the Disney song on YouTube and I'm amazed at how well and easily it lends itself to your version. The second one was also well done Zoe.
"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
Disney has some remarkable songs
that can be added to or swapped around to fit into a TG element.
Mulan is the biggest one that we don't have to do much with to make it personal to us.
I like what you did with The Lion King, another one that is good is Part of your world from The Little Mermaid. I could go on and list several more but that would take the fun out of it...
Zoe you are a remarkable writer and I am glad that you have taken a chance to share your talent with the rest of us here.
