I just want to congratulate my SF Giants for winning the World Series. After seeing the disgusting Tshirts the Texans composed "Steers vs Queers" I have to laugh. Our group of mutts weren't suposed to have a chance against the power of the steers, but pitching will always beat hitting and the last two games proved that. I only hope they can do it again next year, Arecee

Rugby union. You know it makes sense.
Baseball World Series
I don't know about the players on those two teams, but Major League Baseball has players from all over the world. And the baseball organizations covered by the general agreement involve teams from all over the western hemisphere with associated organizations in Japan, Korea, Australia, France, the Netherlands and China. Canadian teams have won the series, twice.
It is a World Series in the sense that the best professional teams in a world wide sport compete with players from all over the world. That's the name of the last series in the playoff tournament, much like the final match in the world yachting competition is for the America's Cup. It doesn't have to make sense, that's the name.

You know there are more people (a lot more) in the countries with teams eligible for the world series than there are in all the countries that play in the Six Nation and Tri-nation combined. (You really should have gone with cricket (and had India on your side), or with that other game you blokes play.)

Most Americans don't know from rugby, even though the most popular sport in the US is rugby; yes, gridiron football is based on rugby. Rugby football, or at least, a more recognizable version of it was almost banned in the US by presidential decree because of too many deaths of young men which helped turn the game into the armored spectacle it is today.
Just like the impetus of working men playing cricket but only having a half-day to do so helped create baseball by modifying a children's game called townball. And baseball accidentally turned into the best spectator sport ever because the new rules moved the action to one side of the field instead of taking place way out in the middle away from a potential crowd, like in cricket.
Association football, while more popular worldwide, is not actually as good a game to watch. There are really only two kinds of distinguishable players plus the refs on the field in soccer, where in baseball there are 11 to 21 people on the field, each of whom is doing a noticeably different job. The complexity is fascinating.
In soccer, hockey and basketball, action is nearly constant. There's no time for a spectator to enjoy the whole experience for fear of missing something important. Baseball (like gridiron football), is punctuated. Action happens and it is exciting then there is time to think and reflect on what happened and what may happen. And discuss with other fans.
Rugby is a little less constant than soccer, except the Aussie version, but the rules tend to impel the game forward with no regard for the beauty of the moment or the setting. There's a clock. Baseball, like cricket, has no clock. Spectators get to enjoy what they are doing for the pleasure of being where they are. Why would anyone watch golf for any other reason than the pleasure of being on, or imagining oneself on, a golf course?
Rugby, soccer, gridiron, hockey, basketball, polo, pretty much all goal games are forms of mock war. Baseball, cricket, golf and other point-to-point games are forms of mock hunting. Rally games like tennis, ping-pong, badminton are mock duels, or small scale conflicts in the case of volleyball. Most other sports are contests; races of various sorts or trials of strength, accuracy or intellect, like weight-lifiting, darts and chess. Wrestling, boxing and fencing are contests that are also mock duels where most races are mock hunts.
The history and philosophy of sport can be fascinating.

Candlestick Park...
One of the "no longer in existence" stadiums I've seen a pro game in. I saw the Giants beat the Astros back in '67 (I think it was) when I was there for bat day. (No, I don't recall the game... But I've been told that Willie Mays hit a home run.) The bat I got, I recall, as I used it later when I thought baseball was fun - 5th grade... It was a "Willie McCovey bat. (Back then, the kids got bats one day a year - with the "signature" of a major player "engraved" into the meat of the bat.)
Aside - I still wonder what happened between 4th & 5th grades... That blocked my memory and turned me (briefly) into someone that enjoyed (and did well at) team sports like baseball... *shrugs* As my parents won't (or can't) tell me, I suspect I'll never know.
But back to the subject... So, I've been to that park too. (The other park was Three Rivers Stadium - where I saw a Pirates game... in '87, I think. No clue who they were playing. LOL)

The 'Stick
It's still there, drove past it two weeks ago. The football 49ers play there and they want to build a new stadium in Santa Clara but still be called the SF '49ers. So far, SC ain't buying that. :)
My sis-in-law on the peninsula loves the NFL but hates the 'Stick, she'd love a new stadium somewhere closer and warmer. Though the 'Stick is warm compared to some football stadiums. :)

Steers in Texas
Most cismen in Texas know what a steer is and, I find, they avoid identifying with them. Of course there are a lot of new comers in DFW, so who knows. The bar in which I watch the only game I saw would have been overwhelmingly for the Queers if that had been the teams, but almost everyone there was for the Rangers.
Gratz anyway.

were and I swear a steer is, um a bull which has had it's, um, this is soooo embarrassing... you know what's removed. And I'm not talking about the horns thought they often do that too.
I was afraid Texas would do something stupid like this during the World Series. I've known some great Texans over the years and as a Northerner I can actually understand them unlike say a rural Georgia or even a Savannah accent.

But then remember despite its many great attribute, Texas, Dallas to be specific, is home to America's Queens, um Team, The Dallas Gayboys, um Coyboys. The Coyboys are proof of the definition of the NFL as The National Felon League.
Remember the Cheesehead hats were in direct retaliation for those ridiculous giant foam "We're Number One" hands/fingers and the foam coyboy hats.
