I saw this too…

…and thought I'd send it to you and maybe post a blog myself. Glad you saw it. I thought about a team drawn from Arsenal and Arsenal Ladies would be interesting, but I reckon it would be enough to give the FA* terminal heart failure. Mind you, on second thoughts that might be quite a good thing for such a load of old toss-pots.

Strangely...

I saw that at work and contemplated a blog post as well, but somehow didn't get around to it. Of course, if I had, I'd have added a tongue-in-cheek comment advising them to contact the Melchester United Press Office :)

Sadly, I suspect sports teams are excluded from certain provisions of the Equalities Act 2010 - I remember reading somewhere that the FA doesn't allow mixed gender teams from 11+, even at school level. Sure, the traditional genders have certain anatomical differences which result in differences in performance between the statistical average male and female, but I bet there's a hefty degree of overlap between the two...
But I suppose it's easier administratively to draw artificial distinctions between groups of people than to base teams on actual ability.

Since most clubs have teams of both genders, it would be a start if the two were allowed to occasionally train together, or play "friendlies" on a M vs F or mixed vs mixed basis. As for changing facilities - how about encouraging the lads of both teams to use one changing room, and the ladies to use another. Once changed, each complete team could migrate to a single room for the pep talk. After all, wouldn't it be nice if teams treated each other as human beings and kept rivalries to the field only. Teams could then offer constructive criticism to each other rather than relying entirely on the advice/opinion of their coach and video replays. (Dream on, Ben... the chances of teams being friendly towards each other - particularly in the top leagues - are about as high as the FA allowing both genders on the same pitch at the same time...)

Besides which, in more general terms, there are lots of sports where anatomical differences probably wouldn't matter in the slightest - snooker and darts for example, which are far more about hand-eye coordination than athletic ability.

As the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only left-handers are in their right mind!

The injury rate will tell.

I can't be objective on this because I do not believe in equality for women. I believe in equity however; my theory being that we are not alike and some functions are best done by either gender. It will remain to be seen if women can hold their own in the game.
