A Fascination With Dolls

I imagine it just comes with the territory to a certain degree, but for as long as I can remember I've not just loved, but been captivated and fascinated with dolls.

I never cared much for baby dolls, but 'little people' of all sorts, especially porcelain figurines and lifelike dolls, are some of my favorites.

By that same token, I've always held a paranoid aversion toward 'evil' dolls in fiction. Of course, I know dolls aren't 'evil' in the real world, but I can't sit through any of the Chuckie movies despite my love of horror ;-)

I've been watching old episodes of the Nickelodeon TV show, "Are You Afraid of the Dark?". In season 3 there was an episode called "The Tale of the Doll Maker" in which a tween girl learns that her friend's disappeared, and later in the episode discovers that an antique doll house turned the girl into a porcelain doll.

I know it's been done before (though I can't off-hand recall a specific example) in TG fiction to turn a character into a doll/manniquin/whatnot, but the idea has absolutely captivated my imagination. I think I'm going to use it for a one-shot "adventure" in the next issue of Aria Blade.

I'll have to see what I can come up with and see if I can work it into the main plot (Sorry, no spoilers! ;-))

More to be thinking about anyway. I want to get to the big party in the Robin-verse because I'm really looking forward to people's reactions, but I don't want to rush it either, so maybe working with two very separate plot threads will spur the creative juices in both regards :-D

Yes' it's been done

but from the stories I've read that had this theme, usually it is for some fetishistic craziness that is beyond me, probably for some weird transvestite fantasy to become totally powerless in somebody else's hand who will dress them up all the time. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? Though I seriously doubt you have that kind of intention in an Aria Blade story.

I've always been a stuffed animal type person myself and no I am not into furries.

Yeah, I definitely had

Yeah, I definitely had something more sinister and very... un-sexual in mind. I'm sure Freud would have a field day with it all the same, but I just have this mental image of someone, possibly even Raven, discovering an adorable Aria Blade action figure and suddenly realizing it's just a little too lifelike... ;-)

Totally just throwing ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks at this point though, so that's not really a direct hint so much as 'I agree with you'/where I'm not going with it ^_^

Fetish has its place in fiction, but if I ever write anything purely for fetish, I'll be keeping it for myself, largely because that sort of thing is, for me, just way too personal to share so easily. :-D

Dolls... blow them up! I

Dolls... blow them up!

I had an SO who collected dolls. Madam Alexander dolls are creepy in quantity, and quite frankly, if I ever see a collection of Precious Moments, like her mother had, again, I'm going to gun them down.

Precious Moments being cut down by a line of submachine gun fire amuses me on several levels, probably none of them healthy ;-)

The closest I ever came to actually starting a collection was back when they introduced the line of Midnight Dance Bratz dolls. Unfortunately shelf space was (and remains, sadly) too limited for me to really get into it.

All things in moderation, I think. Plus, the amount of dusting that a massive collection would require would give me nightmares ;-)

Imagine a six foot tall

Imagine a six foot tall glass cabinet, with shelves every foot. The cabinet is approximately 18 inches on a side (maybe 20). EVERY shelf is full of Precious Moments crap.

Next, you have to go next to it at least four times a week. What would YOU want to do?

Oh, I just meant it was

Oh, I just meant it was probably unhealthy for me to be so amused by the thought :-D

Personally I've never been big on official collections anyway, with the sole exception of this REALLY awesome Coca-Cola polar bear t-shirt I used to have. I miss that thing.

I think it's more fun, and more personalized, to build one's own collection to personal taste (Well, okay, the other exception being the afforementioned Midnight Dance. Their heads may be disproportionately large, but they were still adorable :-D)

I'd probably feel exactly the same way, for what it's worth, though.

Old Twilight Zone..

[email protected] .. episode. Don't recall the title, but I remember being scared %#&*less! Dolls have totally freaked me out, ever since! Even though some of them are just So Darn Cute!!

(They're the ones that scare me the most!!!)

I remember that episode!

A ballerina, a clown, a Highland bagpiper, an army soldier, and ... Gah, one other one I think. They all turned out to be discarded toys for a charity drive.

Makes me shiver when I think about it, knowing I gave Solace a similar stage-background within the Robin-verse ;-)
