Just got back from third ER visit in 10 days and doctors have decided to put me on house arrest, er, home rest and keep me home from work until I can get a cardiac ablation done. Anyone here have anything like that done?

It seems they are tired of me coming to the ER (A&E to those across the pond) and getting the adenosine too many times; appparently, it stops and restarts the heart and kind of resets the heartrate - sometimes... Very weird feeling watching the ekg blip across the screen and watch it flatline for several seconds; I mean, what are they trying to do, give me a heart attack?!? Even weirder is the feeling when your heart stops, very strange... I have gotten the adenosine a total of 9 times now and do not recommend it as a way to have fun. Anyways, I can't leave the house for the next week until the ablation and will be trying to find a way to relieve my boredom. Any ideas?

ps Oh, and I get to do it as leave without pay, since I have burned through my sick and vacation leave :(

My Dad had an Ablation done a few years ago

Frank's picture

He had an irregular heart beat and they did it to kill off the corrupted cardiac cells that caused it. He came through it fine (he's 85 and was 82 or so when he had it done). I don't recall much suffering after the fact, but I can ask him about it if you would like me to.

Frank

well,

if he got through it okay, it should be a breeze for me :D
Thanks,

Digoxin regulates your heartbeat

When I had my irregular heartbeat they told me I'd be on Digoxin for the rest of my life along with blood thinners.

I'd go see my regular family doctor and ask him to get you tested and on some kind of drug regime that can help you manage the symptoms that led to your need for ablation.

Dayna.

ps. a year later and I'm drug free.

Doctors can be weird.

I work in a hospital so I see all kinds of funny weird stuff and scary too. Like 4am in the morning and the chief of the hospital looks at me and goes."You know I feel so stoned." Imagine, and he was on call that night.

Seriously, I hope you feel better soon and get better as well.

Heart stopper

By the sounds of things, the adenosine shot works the same way as a defibrillator. Both are designed to stop the heart, so your heart's own pacemaker will start it again - hopefully with a regular rhythm.

well, from the te doctor explained it

yesterday afternoon at the ER, the adenosine blocks all electrical activity in the heart for a few seconds, then, like you said, the "heart's own pacemaker will start it again - hopefully with a regular rhythm."
