I'm away from tomorrow for a couple of nights visiting my daughter. I'm also hoping to see my grandson - but I'm not holding my breath, as I have issues with my daughter in law. Consequently, I might not be able to post Bike for a couple of nights.

Thank you for letting us know (we won't now worry that you've met with a nasty accident).

Our thoughts go with you.

Take as long as you need.

If we can cope when you go on holiday for a week or so at a time, we can cope with a few nights.

Besides which, I might take advantage of the opportunity to get a few more chapter summaries added to a certain spreadsheet (am I plugging that project too much? )

I hope your family visit goes well

I hope your family visit goes well, and that you do get to see your grandson. Take care, especially if you're on your bike.

BTW, I'm up to part 712 in my marathon reading of Bike from the beginning! I'm enjoying it immensely.
I am, however, getting seriously sleep deprived.

To sleep?

"To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub"

Just noticed...

Look at that picture. See how carefully it was set up. The valve stems are at the bottom and the tires were mounted expertly with the tires main logo at the top. It would be kind of hard to ride though, there are no pedals.

No Pedals

Puddintane's picture

Serious bikes are sold without them these days, as the choice of a pedal system is individual and complex. So it's no more remarkable than selling a bike without bicycle shoes would be, or a colour-coördinated cycling outfit. There are many varieties of clipless pedals in use, and even magnetic pedals (using very powerful magnets) that offer significant safety in cases of accidental fall, because one doesn't have to perform a special motion to disengage one's foot from the bike.

Rideable?

Angharad's picture

I actually have one of these bikes - it did come with pedals with toe clips, which I've changed to Shimano SPDs, a clipless pedal system. It does however, require a suitable pair of cycling shoes with appropriate cleats to ride comfortably. I've done over 3,200 miles on mine, it being my favourite bike.

Magnetic Pedals

They're handy for people with orthopaedic problems as well, because one can often, in some models at least, reposition the foot slightly to avoid irritating a joint already damaged or under stress. As mentioned in the article, at least some are designed for BMX and mountain biking, because their ability to "automatically" separate the bike pedal from the foot may save one broken bones and extravagant contusions when hurtling down the side of a mountain.

I think I'll stick

with my SPDs - most of the time I remember to unclip them. When I don't, the bruises remind me next time. Having said that, I often ride with one foot unclipped anyway.
