I ran across this article this morning at AE Brain. It seems that a clerical error sent a woman to a man's prison with all the unfortunate consequences. This happen in Durban Africa.

I thought I was writing fiction...
It seems that truth really is stranger.
I'm just sad that this poor person had to suffer horribly because of it.
This kind of fuck-up happens because (a) bureacracies can't seem to get it through their collective brain-cell that "male" and "female" descriptions of gender don't constitute an exclusive set; or (b) that people get given strange names, ya know?
Just because someone dropped a 'e' doesn't mean that common sense has to fly out the window. What were these people thinking? Or not thinking?
Compounded with that is that they assumed 'he' had a gender change, which was why 'he' was put in a man's prison. With female genitals? WTF? Law-suit waiting to happen. It's a pity that someone didn't pick her case up sooner, or that she waited so long before speaking out, but then I guess she didn't have access to cash to pay the legal types.
I despair of this planet sometimes. I can't wait for the mother-ship to come and retrieve me.

PS The 'State' of which I write wouldn't allow that nonsense, which is why Marlon ended up on E Deck. How Marlon got there in the first place is another matter, of course...

Please!!!! I know the feeling Penny. For many years, I used to wish I was an alien, so 'People' with loving caring hearts would show up and take me somewhere else! All the hate and abuse, humans inflict not just on us but the whole planet is senseless. (Animal Planet sometimes breaks my heart) Don't get me, wrong here. I'm very far from being 'Green' crazy, but perhaps I'm a caring 'gardener' and conserver.
I won't go into the horrible things that happens to TG's in prisons. That at least in Penny's "State" is better. This does point out just how far our society truly has to go before we can rightly claim we're 'just.'
If that mothership ever does show up, please consider passing along my address, and I'll do the same. "Beam me up! There no intelligent life down here!"

My god her name is Denise, THEY dropped the 'e' and called her Denis and forced her into a cell with a man and she was raped.
I would be taking legal action ASAP I would have gotten a loan if I had to. I wouldn't have slept until I knew that what had happened had been corrected even if it was just getting the idiot that made the mistake fired.

Considering most bureaucracies require proof of ID, and most forms have a Gender field, you would have thought they would have picked up on the mistake as soon as she handed over her possessions on entrance to prison. Besides which, even post-op M2Fs are usually have the same legal gender as their apparent phenotype.
To go by name alone is stupid - take the names Marion, Hilary, Kim and Jackie for starters. They're usually associated with females, but can be perfectly valid male names as well...
Not to mention disbelieving the evidence in front of their own eyes every 28 days or so with menstruation. Everyone concerned just took the attitude "This piece of paperwork says your name is Denis, therefore you are a male. End of discussion."
Even worse was the apparent policy of the prison of cells shared by multiple prisoners, which just invites abuse. And in remand as well - she hadn't actually been through a trial.
Or, as Penny's story more succinctly put it: "The State Does Not Make Mistakes."
As the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only left-handers are in their right mind!
