Much of the trouble has been influenced by US evangelists. God save us from zealots.

There Ought To Be A Law...
...against religious quackery. These compassionless patriarchists turn "the religion of peace" on its head. Mix that with an ignorant, xenophobic, ill-educated population (anywhere, not just in Uganda), and you get things like Idi Amin, or the genocides.
Americans should be subject to anti-incitement laws, and held responsible for the deaths their hateful words cause, anywhere in the world. These "evangelists" are preaching death (or hate and exclusion at the very least), not religion, and that shouldn't be protected speech.
Not All Of Us Are Like That
Not all of us are like that. The zealots give us a bad name and we all get lumped together with them. Our country does have it's share of over righteous nuts like that. It does not mean that a blanket law should be in place that would stifle any form of protest. That leads down a slippery slope where the government can gain more power over us and even use it as an excuse to abuse it. I dislike stereotyping people because it is unfair. There are good and decent people here just as there are plenty of bad ones. It is the same all over the world. There is a saying that goes "Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely! People in Europe during The Middle Ages found that out when the Catholic Church controlled with an iron fist. It took Martin Luther and his 95 Theses to finally stand up and say enough ! You are right when you say that it is power they crave more than religious conviction. It is going on in The Middle East too with Islamic Fundamentalism. Hopefully, some in the U.N will place severe sanctions on Uganda for even thinking of doing this to Gays and any other group they find undesirable.
I could say a lot on this but it would be hard not to scream
Correct me if I am wrong on my perceptions about Uganda. Mind you the US press ignores much of Africa much of the time so we don't get a lot of coverage here.
Uganda has the one of highest, possibly highest, rates of HIV infection in the world. Uganda has a high level of prostitution and male/female sex out of marriage and after marriage. *Sowing your wild oats* is alive and entrenched in the male part of the culture to the point that rape is also extremely high in the country.
And then there are the multiple tribal wars in the region with the resulting flows of refuges and a history of dictators and corrupt government like the former President Amin,
Oh yeah, singling out gays will solve it all. Maybe singling out Jews, gypsies and the mentally retarded would help? It did wonders for Germany in the 30's and 40s. I'm being facetious here, duh!
John in Wauwatosa trying hard not to shout and don't ask me about the meddling by those conservative religious people.
So sad and so stupid. Thanks for the FYI, Ang.

It Makes You Wonder
It makes you wonder if Fred Phelps and his ilk have been at work over there. They may have sent "missionaries" over there to poison the minds of the people . I know there are several other denominations that are in play over there too, but his comes to mind because they have a website that actually spreads their message of hate even further than just going out and preaching. These tactics are like going back in time and seeing the Spanish Inquisition and stake burnings that the early church used to get rid of people who were heretics and otherwise undesirable in the eyes of the church. They are definitely forgetting about the love of Christ in their zeal to crush anyone of a different perspective than them. They promote hypocrisy of the worst kind because one of the Ten Commandments says "Thou Shall not kill"and they are proposing to do just that.
could swing this way
If things swung to the far right here in the future, these people and their kind could get some traction over here. We may not be gay but a bigot paints with a very wide brush.
(sorry if this verges on political, I did not know any other way to phrase it, Erin, please delete it if you feel it is inappropriate)
U S Law
I vaguely remember that the US has something similar. Unprotected sex between someone with HIV and someone NOT infected, without informing that person, I THINK has been charged with attempted murder. (Not 100% sure) Plus charges against HIV protesters spitting on cops. It's been a while but I do remember the news reports but not results.

What makes it really
...'Interesting' is that people bigot zealots claim that gays (or Jews, or shrimp-eaters, or toilet paper users) are "Aganist the Will of God". I mean, logically, everything that was truly said by one of divine nature, and was directly heard by more than a few chosen people, was about two thousand years ago, at least in Christianity. Practically anything else... Is spotty at best. They are claiming to base their 'beliefs'-bigotry on at best passed through second hands and outdated for more than a millenium words. Are they *God* to claim to know *God*'s Will, are they *chosen prophets* of *God*, or are they, say, a designated person to relay that will (you know, like the Catholic Papa). No.
