That's horrendous. I hope
That's horrendous. I hope that the Memphis police catch them quickly, although I won't hold my breath waiting.
It sickens me that police in my state can do this and it seems that no one cares. (Locally that is)

I'm at a loss for civil words... same old story, isn't it? What are the chances that something constructive will come out of this....
He conquers who endures. ~ Persius
it doesn't matter
... that I didn't know her at all. A public beating with the old, no one wants to get involved. Not that you can really blame people for that. It happens here, it happens everywhere. Now she's been shot dead and of course the thoughts go toward the cops involved in the last effort. I don't know the details of the first other than a quick read. I know almost nothing of this... last event.
It could be me, that's the thing that hits. Over and above someone dieing somewhere. How can anyone benefit from this, mindless violence and perhaps bigotry. Was it the cops, some nameless idiot, does it matter in one sense? Yes it does because if it was the cops that is a last line of defense removed. The impartial line that most would die to preserve damaged again by one fool. It may be something else, someone else, but just that doubt causes damage. I really hope it wasn't a cop.
But still... damn it, why? Stupid rhetorical question I guess, but ya gots ta ask don't ya.

Was it the cops, some nameless idiot...
That would probably be idiots plural, as three men were seen running away, thugs typically needing the security of numbers before they can muster the courage to use a gun to shoot an unarmed woman...

I am very fortunate in that I have a number of genetic female friends and it has helped me key off what circumstances they put themselves in. That and the fact that I have two guardian angels has kept me alive.
One never knows though. I or anyone could get knifed in the middle of the street at noon on Sunday.
I am sorry that she is dead.

Hate
Hate breeds hate. Hate excuses bigotry. Hate kills.
Yesterday my daughter came home from high school with the news that a boy who would have played in the state semi-finals in football on Friday was suspended from the team. He used the N*%%#$ word to describe our president-elect on facebook and somehow school officials heard about it.
Lines can be drawn between the incident at my duaghter's school and Duanna's murder. Obviously the boy is being punished for repeating what he more than likely heard in his home. Obviously Duanna's death probably is an outgrowth of the transphobia that fired the prior beating.

Sigh.
I hope they catch the murderer or er's and find them with intent and premeditation. I hope it honestly was premeditated and they get life. You see if it's not premeditated they'll get manslaughter with 10-20 years on 2nd degree I think.
I'm not usually for hate crime legislation, even for Gay's, but I think for some Transsexuals, Drag Queens, Transvestites etc. cross an invisible line that even Gay's don't cross that puts them in danger. We're not talking about just the male feeling tricked, thinking he wasn't with a woman. I'm talking about the religious people for one. But even more then them Trans challenges at the heart of what most humanity foolishly pins their identity on. Self is not gender, it's what you are underneath. Be you kind, insightful, wise, merciful, a steady and fast friend, etc. Anyway, challenging that in people is dangerous. Maybe charging them with a Hate Crime in addition with stick it into your heads you don't mess with Transpeople except in self-defense and vice versa. My Libertarian nature does balk a bit at this however.
I would personally prefer having the numbers there instead. I'm talking about looking into old and current cases of Trans being murdered, assaulted, etc. and charging them appropriately. If these numbers really shoot up, getting the guilty thrown in prison I feel that will have the same effect and will be even more positive for Trans people too.
