No comments for over three hours in the middle of the day? That's just weird when this site averages over 3 comments an hour and generally manages 2 even in the middle of the night. Anyone having problems with the commenting mechanism?

8 to 8.15 BST is when the server does a backup of the database. It also pauses at 10 BST for a shorter time, about two minutes, to clear some logs. Those are the slowest traffic times even though I know they are inconvenient for non-Western Hemisphere visitors.

That won't affect me then!
Once I retired, I decided early mornings were one thing I was going to give up! I now rise, as a gentleman of leisure should, on the stroke of 9am (BST right now). Being on the road cycling my 13 miles to work at 0630 every week day summer and winter for years was sufficient I think LOL.

But then I have had difficulties of late where the site keeps logging me out when I read stories or look at comments.
This morning was considerably worse than usual. XP Pro, latest version w/updates, AOL/internet explorer as browser via AT&T DSL. I have reconfigured my firewall to not be so restrictive but it is still pretty tight.

IE and AOL
The site does not work well with IE. This is because I am running Drupal, a geek-built engine optimized to run with Firefox. It doesn't run that great with Safari, either, which is my own preferred browser. Drupal's problem with IE is that Drupal is an international effort and attempts to follow international standards in coding for HTML, XHTML and AJAX. IE is a Microsoft product and MS follows their own standards, disdaining international ones. With several different versions of IE out that are not even all using the same standards, it's just easier to ignore IE and hope for the best. The site does have some specific code that detects IE and adjusts things to work properly but the two most recent versions broke many of these adaptations.
AOL is also a problem because they use extensive proxies that are not always up to date. If you have a problem with a page here using AOL, try your browser's method to force a page reload without proxies. Not a thing we can do about it from here.
BC is a huge internet application optimized for as many users as practicable. It's actually one of the largest database applications on the web. When MS stops moving the target, the core code here will probably be able to catch up with the latest versions of IE. In the meantime, Firefox works better, faster and is more secure than IE. So is Safari. Both are free.
Sorry not to be able to help more with IE and AOL problems.
Sometime early this morning, Bob tweaked a few parameters and restarted the apache server. The downtime was probably about 40 seconds. That might have been your problem this morning.
The logging you out thing is AOL handing you an expired proxy cache or your cookies are configured wrong. It happens to me with Roadrunner, too, but never with ATT (so far).

That's strange.
The ONLY times I've had problems with IE turned out to be missing "closing" tags in Poster's HTML. I've been using IE 6 SP2 here for over a year now. I've never had problems commenting (okay, maybe problems with what I said in comments, but not in actually commenting).
Oh well. I guess I'll wait around to see when things go wrong. (Then you can tell me "I told you so.")

IE6 is the one to run if you have a choice, it's the one the code in Drupal is counting on.

FYI, I'm still using IE6, but ocassionally fire up Firefox on a U3-enabled USB thumb drive, and I don't see any real differences in appearance or functionality of BC with either one.

AOL has been real pesky of late after I cleaned out a ton of temp files.
Often going directly from IE via my DSL loads sites AOL won't or loads them much faster. I do have the YAHOO interface with AT&T but I rarely use it, Too many bells and whistles I have no interest in.

P.S. The logged on and off bit at BC is real annoying. I can go into a story and be logged on but go to comment and I am *Not Authorized*. If I come back to the main page of BC I may be logged back on or not, very random. Maybe I have a Gremlin in my PC or perhaps a Pacer, AMC was fron Wisconsin afterall.
