It has been brought to my attention that Pope Francis is considering appointing the Irish theological scholar Linda Hogan as the first woman cardinal of the Catholic church. I wonder if he got the idea from the story I posted here many years ago.

You don't have to be a priest to be a cardinal
Most cardinals are bishops or archbishops, or at least monsignors or priests, but there have been monk and deacon cardinals (and at least one deacon Pope), too, and even persons who had no office in the church at all before becoming cardinals. Would be one way to get women into the hierarchy of the church.

At the time, I made that
At the time, I made that point in response to my story. In fact, the "requirement" that a cardinal be an ordained priest dates only from an administrative decision at the beginning of the 20th century. About 1/3 of the cardinals are senior members of the curia (i.e. bureaucrats), such as the head of the Vatican Bank, the Vatican Secretary of State, or the "mayor" of Vatican City -- appointed because of the positions they hold.
As of late last year, it ain't happening...
Alas.

never say never
Never say never. Still, it does seem to indicate that they had been reading my story.
Well, at least some of them...
...they do tend to dress up in frocks of one sort or t'other. They all need quite a lot of work on their sense of fashion, though. The dresses they do wear are so last millennium.
