I'm taking a straw poll. Would anyone be interested in an audio version of my books. The ones I'm thinking of are God Bless the Child (the whole trilogy), Wrestling Against Myself, and Unreachable. I don't want to start the process if there isn't interest.

It depends

upon the person doing the reading.

There are some people who are very good at narrating Audio Books. There are a lot of people who have absulutely no variation or incatation in their voice. Those people should not even try to make these books.

Can the person convey empathy, anger or happiness just by talking?

IMHO, producing a good Audio Book is a lot more than the words on the page.

Perhaps...

Start off by recording a page or so - if it's one with a mixture of narration and multiple people speaking, so much the better. Upload it somewhere, share it, and see what the reaction is. As Samantha says above, some people are brilliant at reading aloud, some are naff: monotones, mumbles, or even the complete opposites: helium overdose (very high and squeaky), children's TV presenter (This! Is! So! Exciting!), unintentional parody (far too much dynamic range) etc.

So demonstrate a sample and get feedback on what people think of it based on that.
