because she was made and not in the normal "Zombie bite you way". Her Zombie is her blood stuff as seen a while back when the Doctor had it pumped into her system to beat that Funk Lady, Foxy (i think that was her name). She still has impulses and is more like a child than anyone else, but she is not a normal class of Zombie

Tigerlily Jones...Unity is a super-soldier killing machine who needs, every now and again, to go on a rampage of undead killosity. Or a fun lurch. As she spends half her time reading goblin porn to a talking dog, how could she NOT be intelligent?
U.N.I.T.Y.'s zombieness is mostly a facade
In truth, Unity is closer to being an intelligent, self-aware fluid, with more similarities to the intelligent sludge living in the Skin Horse basements than the zombies she typically runs with. The zombie form is simply the one she is most comfortable with.
As for being more intelligent than most zombies, while I guess that's true, don't forget that Skin Horse exists in the same universe as Shaenon's previous comic, Narbonic, a comic that makes infrequent references to a mad science periodical called "The New Journal Of Malology," whose editors are zombies created by the editors of the previous journal who consequently ate their masters and took their jobs. :P

U.N.I.T.Y.'s base cells were cloned from Mell, the hyper violent henchwoman (and futureworld POTUS) of mad scientist Helen Narbon. :)
Really, UNITY is a chaotic neutral flesh golem created by mad science. She's also Sweetheart's babe.

So what's Sweetheart's story?
Speaking of unusual intelligence, Sweetheart the dog is another one. Does she have some human DNA that gave her larger than canine brain? I suppose I could go to the SKIN HORSE archives to the point where her character is introduced, but it's hot and I'm lethargic and bleaahhh ....... I love the way she's the brightest and most responsible member of the whole Skin Horse team (until her doggy nature takes over....). Probably my favorite character, I wish I was half as white n' fluffy n' cute as her. Love this comic, I get more audible laughs out of it than any strip in the newspaper that's fer sure...

Sweetheart
Sweetheart has been there from the very beginning, along with Tip and UNITY.
The back story is that she was genetically enhanced by a mad scientist in a plot to overthrow Canada (why would anyone want to do that, proving the scientist was mad). Somewhere along the line the pack ate their master. The Pack currently lives in Alaska with some werewolves.

...was created by a Mad Scientist as part of a pack of Evil Hounds destined to go on a Rampage (the capital letters are important) to bring down human civilisation with a crash, Nyahahahahahah!

Somehow, Sweetheart ended up different to expected - as evidenced by her idea of a rampage...
As the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only left-handers are in their right mind!

She is made up of many different parts of different cadavers. So, in a way, she is a female version of the Frankenstein creature with a taste for flesh.
