Removed, probably temporarily
We're testing things to see what we can do to improve speed and reliability here. Part of the testing is going through removing some things experimentally.

I like to know who is on line. It also shoes how active things are.

Joking aside,
I will point out that looking at the commentary feed on the main page is a good way of working out how many users are online. Refresh the page if you haven't done so recently, and look at the time since the comment at the bottom of the list was posted. The shorter the time, the more of us are commenting. = )
Do we really need to know EXACTLY WHO is online?
If it would reduce the loading time for the main page, I would condone the removal of the "who's online" feed.

I like the list
Makes me feel like I'm in the same room with this friend or that one, instead of an unknown quantity of nameless strangers. And it also lets me know if so-and-so is here and I need to keep my back to the wall to keep from being garotted (although not so much of that since they upped my meds...). And if I have something to say to someone, if I see they're present I might hurry up to PM them so I can hopefully get a hello back in something like real time. So if it's possible I'd like to see it return.

Exactly that
I send and receive a few PMs, and knowing the person is here makes it far more personal and immediate.
