I fell asleep once while driving
I fell asleep behind the wheel, luckily the sound of my tires rubbing against the curb jolted me awake. That kept me up for the additional 3 minutes I needed to get home. But boy was my heart pounding.

falling asleep driving
I suffered from sleep apnea. It was so severe that I would fall awake anytime I wasn't actively involved in what I was doing. If I became even remotely bored I would begin to fall asleep... so tired I could barely keep my head up.
My mother ended up in hospital and every day I would drive the 80km to visit here in hospital after work. I would be exhausted by the time I got there and visited. Then the drive home would be an exercise of my will against the fatigue.
Knowing that I could sleep the instant I got into bed... didn't help one little bit.
I would often fall asleep while driving. How I didn't kill myself or someone else amazes me to this day. I would be driving 100km/h along with traffic on the freeway and never came close to leaving my lane or hitting someone... but there would be several times each trip where I'd fall asleep for a few seconds.
I got a CPAP device and not only did my health improve, but I was able to drive again with confidence.

oops sorry
I must have hit submit more than once.
I did have an accident yesterday.
I fell off my bike while coming home from payng my income tax bill - delayed shock? The important thing, is that the bike was okay - the bits of me I left on the roadside will hopefully regrow.
