Well, I am excited that there is going to be a book version of big closet. My problem is, that I have probably read hundreds of stories since I started here, and thanks to having a brain built to drain pasta, I don't remember very many of them. So how do I nominate? The other issue is my own stuff. I am finding it hard to feel comfortable putting my own writing forward, when there are so many much more talented people here. But, I am going to make an effort to do both. find something I loved to nominate, and pick something of mine i think worthy of consideration.

How to choose?

My solution was fairly straightforward, if a little pragmatic.

I have a list of "must-read" authors here on BCTS. In other words, if any of the authors on my list publishes something, then I'll read it. I'm rarely disappointed.

My list is a virtual one: there's nothing written down, just those authors whose writing I've enjoyed.

Now some of these authors are prolific, with many of their works extending across numerous parts, having >40k words, or both. Sadly, I had to rule them out on account of length.

So, I identified five authors on my "must-read" list. I decided that it wouldn't be a good idea to nominate more than one work per author, since we're looking to create something fairly representative, rather than focusing on one person's work.

For each of these authors that I respect, I went through their published works, and chose something that I've enjoyed, and was within the word limits.

It took me about half an hour, but my vote is now in.

That is basically what I did. The problems were the same, where a huge output had to be cherry-picked for pieces that were not only short enough, but that said something about our condition and place in humanity. Unfortunately, finding short enough pieces was hard!
