Well, as of yesterday, "Santa School" has become my most successful piece to date in terms of comments left, surpassing even "The Dead Kid". Fifteen people have taken the time and effort to say something publicly about it, and that is wonderful, and I wish to thank them, as well as everyone who left a kudo. Regardless of how it does in terms of the Christmas contest, it has been an uplifting experience for me. There is only one fly in the ointment so to speak, however. I showed it to my mom, and she said she found it sad. I asked her why, and she said, "because I see in this piece your dreams, Dorothy, and they will never be real, and that's sad." She then reminded me of the fact that we simply do not have the kind of money it would take to transform me into my true self. She has a point, but i have to keep going anyway, with or without hope.

But... although this may seem to be true, no-one can ever truly know what the future may bring. You may win a lottery, or come into a bequest, or...
There are many, many ways your life might change, and you will have absolutely no idea which of them it will be.
Twenty, thirty years ago I had no idea that I would be able to come as far as I have. Even ten years ago I would never have imagined that I would have moved halfway down the country and be in the physical state that I currently am. Five years ago I could not imagine that I could openly walk round my house in clothes that fit and are comfortable. I wish that one day you will be able to say the same.
At least your mother knows. If I told mine I would be met with blank incomprehension. I have a seriously weird maternal parental unit!

Penny is absolutely right, but let me say it a little differently.
In the first place; becoming a stunning beauty isn't going to happen for 99% of the people on this planet, so maybe a more realistic goal is needed.
Beyond that:
About fifteen years ago I woke at four in the morning totally convinced my back was tight against the wall. My spouse and I went from our bed down to our hottub where I outlined four economic and legal problems -- each of which was a killer for my business and "totally insurmountable."
Looking back I have to laugh at what I thought was a problem back then and how I eventually overcame each and every one of those situations.
You're allowing your negative attitude to control your life. At least that's how it appears to me. Get over it. Figure out what you really want and go out and make it happen. That's all anyone can do. You will soon discover that it is the effort to achieve your goals that really matters. If you can tell yourself at four in the morning that you've done everything possible to get where you want to go, sleep will quickly follow.
If, when you look in the mirror, you see only a problem, you will never be happy. You're way ahead of the game. Most people never tell their parents how they feel, so you have that going for you . . . and that is huge.
Set realistic goals. Do what you can to reach those goals. Don't set artificial limits on what you can achieve. Life is really that simple. Honest it is.

Never say "Never!"
Surgery may be an almost imperceptible speck on the horizon, but there's an entire path / road between you and it, and every step on that path brings you closer to the real you. You've only just started entering the public arena as the true you - so one of the first steps would presumably be building up the confidence to go out in public more often. Even literal 'baby steps' such as venturing 100yrds further than you've been before count. The important thing is to stay on the proverbial path and head towards the goal. It doesn't necessarily matter how slow you take it, as long as you don't turn around and run off in the opposite direction, or look down at the path and think "It's awfully narrow - what if I fall off?"
