There hasn't been much around my way, but I couldn't resist pointing out some of the dafter stories to emerge from the UK's recent snow.

In case it hasn't been reported in your neck of the woods yet: A woman dialled 999 (UK Emergency Services number) to report a theft.
So what?
The item in question was a snowman, with pound coins for eyes.
Understandably, the force has branded her "Completely irresponsible".

Meanwhile, a teenage burglar discovered the hard way that using your feet as a getaway vehicle isn't such a good idea when the ground's covered in snow... the police can simply follow your footprints to where you're hiding out!

Network Rail decided to send two de-icing trains in for servicing. They claim they brought in more modern trains from non-affected parts of the network to replace them. I've used a fairly neutral article from the BBC here, but unsurprisingly the press were scathing.

The train thing
To be fair, in the sensationalist version published in my daily paper, after hammering Network Rail for what they did, it transpires:
These two train sets are 57 years old.
They were withdrawn in September for rebuilding/upgrading, not maintenance.
Other units were brought in from areas less affected by the ice/snow.
...but it made a good headline, didn't it?

Accent
From being Scottish by nationality and growing up in Scotland. It's normal up there. You go into a corner shop in Glasgow, served by a man with tanned skin and a turban, and he sounds as Scottish as the white guy in the Glasgow Rangers football shirt standing behind you. In South Shields on Tyneside there is an Arab/Laskar community that has been there for over 500 years, so integrated that people from S Shields are known collectvely as 'sand dancers'. The first time you hear "Howay, wor Abdul, gizza tab" (hey, our Abdul, may I have a cigarette?) can be disconcerting.
