I have discovered a side effect of my little breakthrough the other day. I seem to have lost any protection i had from my emotions and they are in overdrive. I am hyper-cycling, with my ups and downs going like a roller coaster traveling at about Mach 10. I am going from stratospheric highs to crying from utter depths of depression in less time than it took to write this paragraph. I am not sure exactly what I can do about this, except ride it out and hope things slow down soon.

Breathing 4-8-4-4

erin's picture

Try this: breathe in as deeply as you can for a slow 4 count. Hold it for a count of 8. Breathe out for 4, hold for 4 more and repeat until you feel calm and centered. Usually takes 10 to 20 minutes, though even 2 minutes can do a lot for you. When you get good at this, double the counts.

Some recommend that the hold count also be 8, but I'm asthmatic and holding in is way easier than holding out.

Hugs,
Erin

If...

...you can do this sitting Seiza as well, and maybe counting the breathing cycles you complete, that helps as well. The focus on a simple, fundamental act like breathing is very helpful.

Your self talk can help

You really can tell yourself to calm down; to not let them get to you; to think of happy things.

You can also do hot baths, a long walk, though take your coat and gloves. So much of what gets us in a mood will pass.

When I started this debacle, I had a tendency to stop breathing and go with the grief. That is why Erin's advice is so good. Our brains can not work without Oxygen.

Much peace

If I were you I would speak

If I were you I would speak to a doctor, you're describing symptoms of bi-polar.
