Coming up in the next Angel of... story:

Aaron was standing at a window, the lower portion of which was open. As was the screen beyond. Melody needed a moment to see who - or, rather, what - he was talking to: A small, nondescript grey bird standing on the window sill.

"You need to stop teasing that cat," said Aaron, sternly.

The bird gave an irate chirp.

"I don't care if you think it's fun. It's not fun for you when you get caught. It's not fun for me when I have to rescue you. It's definitely not fun for the cat when I take you away from him. One of these times I won't be quick enough."

The bird gave another chirp, somehow managing to sound insincerely repentant.

"I'm just telling you to stop teasing the cat! It's not that hard. Just stop."

The bird glared at him, then leapt into the air and flew out the opening. With a sigh, Aaron closed the screen and the window and turned around. He seemed surprised to find that he had an audience.

Inspired by an actual event. No, I didn't actually have a conversation with the bird. :-)

That sounds familiar …

My sister's budgie always annoyed our terrier mix by flying low over her head. One time he misjudged, lost his tailfeathers and got soaked through. No real harm done. His little bird's brain was obviously incapable of learning as he repeated that mistake a few months later (with new tailfeathers). All that was left was a tailfeather in the terrier's bed …

Something in the 1st paragraph suggested that you observed someone else conversing with a bird. Did you?

I have become adept at

I have become adept at rescuing birds (and snakes) my cats have brought in. Several years ago I rescued a small, grey-brown finch of some sort, gathering it in a towel and putting it out a window. A few days later a similar (or perhaps the same) bird landed on my mouse pad while I was working, looked up at me and chirped expectantly. It stayed there while I opened a window and got a towel. I picked the bird up and held the towel out the window and it flew off.

A few days after *that* I found a similar (or perhaps the same) bird dead in the basement, where the cat flap is.

These are very common birds around here and those were likely three different creatures. Still, that second seemed to expect me to do something for it.

Just passing through...
