I've decided that when your 73 that recovery from major surgery takes a lot longer than when your in your 60's. And that the doctor was right, you will have good days and bad days. It looks like it's 2 steps forward and 1 step back (sometimes 2). Well, yesterday was a good day, so look for a new chapter of Tommy sometime this morning.

Recovering from surgery

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

Last year, I had surgery to remove the enlarged right node of my hyperactive thyroid. It was an out patient surgery. In at 8 AM, in the operating room by 9:30 back in recovery by 10:30 dressed and on my way home by 11. Of course I couldn't eat before surgery, so I thoroughly intended to have my daughter (my driver since they didn't want me to drive, what with the after affects of the anesthesia) stop at a restaurant for huge brunch. Not! All I wanted to do was go home and sleep. I spent the next week and a half living in my recliner, in my nightgown and eating soft foods so as to not irritate my throat. It took three days for the anesthesia to wear off.

To top everything off, I had a bout with low blood pressure brought on by my blood pressure meds not being needed anymore, since the thyroid, working at half strength was no longer hyper, and not getting enough liquids so I became dehydrated.

All of that, I'd have take in stride 10 years ago. Oh well, I've always heard that getting old wasn't for wimps.

Hugs
Patricia
