To All Those Concerned...
Those of you who were kind enough to comment and PM me about the use of the word 'salient', I have acquiesced and have changed it to 'sentient'. After much consideration and rumination, I felt that the point made was valid and well taken. I have, however, left the word 'saliency' where I thought being important was more important then the issue of sentiency.
I am always open to criticism where ever and whenever a reader finds something questionable. Although writing a good tale is primary, writing it well comes in a very close second. I will be far more careful in the future where a word of 'question' might arise and if I do miss something, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Contextual wise I think sentient was the better choice though it was a salient creature. Thoroughly enjoyed the story.

Sentience vs sapience
I've personally always preferred the word sapience, which has connotations of wisdom, intelligence, awareness and considered, reasoned judgement; over sentience, which only has connotations of being aware of your own senses and perceptions (aware as opposed to being purely instinct or response driven). Every mammal is sentient, as well as many other species who aren't mammals. Sapience is a far more limited set, but much more meaningful.

I thought your use of the word "salient" was perfect. When I read the story I thought, "How clever. In the future they've devised a new legal term to cover that situation."

Sooooo much cultural diversity
I knew what you meant, and in American culture it would have been sentient, but in other cultures around the world it could have been: حساس (Arabic), Sensible (Spanish), 有情 (Chinese) , ymdeimladol (Welsh) , or เกรียวกราว (Thai). It makes me feel PMS'y when people are so fetishistically narrow minded, having come from radical fundy Christian culture, I'm sooo over it.
