My heart goes out to all the family and friends who are now mourning the loss of their loved ones in what is, I believe, the largest mass killing in the US.
I hope no one from our BC community is caught up in this appalling atrocity. To all of you in the USA I send you my love.

The shooter had ties to ISIS and Islamic extremism. He was on an FBI watch list. That's the information CNN has now. Whether it changes in the future is unknown.

of course if it WAS a bomb, it would have been WORSE, a club is a "high density" target for an attack, either type. one bullet, depending on type, etc, can hit two or three people when they are tightly packed.
biggest issue is our government and society do NOT take the threats we face seriously. places like this need to spend some money, government helping perhaps, to make better security. it WILL happen again, this attack just showed all the others out there thinking what they can do, WHAT to do and get a large kill number to guarantee their martyrdom, or for the reward that extremists have offered in the past to go to their families (because they KNOW they will be dead).
all religions have extremists, terrorists, etc. no one group is worse than another in that. while we see certain arabic countries allowing things WE have stopped, they DID happen here at one time. change takes time, and enlightenment, whether it is religion, tradition etc.

A bomb is less personal
This terrorist and hate crime perpetrator (he is BOTH) decided he wanted to go out in a blaze of Martyrdom while at the same time venting his spleen over his hatred of LGBT folks (though it sounds like he focused on the LGB part based on known facts.) He did so by getting to choose which individual target so he can put a bullet into. A bomb, you get what you get.
The sad part is that there are religious conservatives of all stripes who are secretly (or not so secretly) cheering him on, as though 'queers' get their comeuppance for their 'unnatural lifestyle' and 'offense against god.' Now I know why I will never even give a confederate dollar to any conservative church institution.
The wonderful Lt. Governor of Texas quipped
"As a man reaps so shall he sow..."
Like the victims were just getting their due.

So he is apparently guilty only of being a bit mechanical in his worship and not watchful about what his quote might sound like at the moment. I disagree with the man on other subjects but on this one he probably does deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Huh. I live here, and I haven't heard anything about the Lt. Gov going on any tirades. I guess it's because I mostly ignore Austin as much as possible. I don't know which I dislike more - the idea of living in Austin, one of the allergy capitals of the US, or the swamp where they built Washington, D.C.
I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.
Bathroom Tirades
I think Laika means the whole TG bathroom debacle that has been capturing the attention of small-minded people everywhere since the SC law was passed.
It is amazing how we become so tied up in knots over trivialities until something like this happens and we realize that there are real people dying over real issues.

I was very sick over our elections in Texas.
I did not vote for our Lt Governor or our Governor I saw they were bigoted scrum going in. But both of them were very business friendly and had big support to get into office. They are ultra conservative and basically I believe think hate to certain groups is justified in the bible.
But Sadly they got into office.
THe death tole was lowered this morning but still 49 Dead and over 50 wounded still in the Hospital is very disheartening.

Please do not take this as a challenge or an insult. I am just a bit taken aback by your comments.
I voted in the last Texas election, and I am a bit curious about what you are saying regarding the Governor and Lt. Governor.
In what way was their bigotry apparent to you? I am a student of history. I also have strong political beliefs. I believe one of the things my country sadly lacks is the capability to forego demagoguery and engage in honest and open debate. This is most evident on college and university campuses where free speech should be nurtured and yet it is stifled.
The truth should never be the property of the person who can shout louder or cast more insults. If that is how life is, then might is right and whomsoever has the strength to enforce and impose his/her will upon another is automatically right.
To my mind, demagoguery is just another form of bigotry.

This was a dreadful act
which no one in their right mind could condone. What gives him the right to murder fifty people? I cannot understand it. My thoughts are with the families of the victims.
