I love the way Melanie blends pop culture references into her stories. They are always entertaining and well thought out. They reference Gilligan's Island, The Love Boat, Here Comes Mr. Jordan to name but a few.
Some of my fave locations are Timothy Leary High School, Leonard McCoy Middle School, and Jonas Grumby High School.
Her stories are always entertaining and these little pop references are very much a signature trademark, like a Hitchcock cameo.

You my dear, must be older
You my dear, must be older than your profile to remember Mel's references. Or, you were an interesting child. (as was I)

Google
My generation has learned to Google every weird name.
It's easy.
I was an interesting child in that I have 4 older brothers and I grew up on Navy bases. Other than that, I'd say I was pretty meh.

Wait a second- you don't have
Wait a second- you don't have to be old to know who Leonard McCoy is! He's appearing in the new Star Trek movie coming out in exactly two months :D
Now to know who DeForest Kelley is and remember him form something other than a certain outer space based show, then you might be able to say someone is old :(
I'm told STFU more times in a day than most people get told in a lifetime
If you liked Mel's references
If you liked Mel's references, check out Jessie Wolf's "Justice" and "Death Dealer" sagas. A whole lot of pop culture references through the ages, some extremely hilarious and very apt for the situations.
But I have to agree that well placed and fitting references can make for a great scene, especially those ones.

For me Melanie Brown's
For me Melanie Brown's stories are those very very even without knowing a thing about those you've mentioned.
