Got "Ma'am"ed yesterday while out shopping.
And I in no way pass. I wasn't even trying to as such.

I just kind of wear mixed relatively gender neutral clothing.
Although this day happened to be a pink day.

It was a store security guard, maybe the guy was just half blind, or just zoned out. My face is definitely masculine, and I did nothing but shave well before going out, no makeup no lip gloss or even chapstick, no nail polish. I do wear my hair in a ponytail, yet my legs are not shaved, and am a bit on the chubby side so have minimal man-boobs.

What I had on, Guy's retro(above the knee) cargo shorts in olive, Gal's t-shirt in pink with butterflies on it, Gal's rubber sports sandals in off white with some pink, a ball-cap in pink with the city name on it. My ponytail was tucked through the adjustment loop of the ball-cap rather then below it. And I was carrying one of those day-pack/purses that both men & women seem to carry now in a camouflage pattern but in pink.

While I knew I was wearing some female clothing they where of the type worn by both genders and had not made any further effort to appear female, so this kind of surprised me. I figured I just looked like a guy wearing pink and a rather girly t-shirt. Note, I do see guys wearing pink around here & the ponytail at ball-cap height is not uncommon either.

I have gotten ma'am from store clerks when not even really trying to present femme. [ yoga pants, black t-shirt, black jacket, runners ]

and hey beautiful walking down the street dressed like that.

the less dressy look actually seems to help with being passable.

Stupidity is a capital offense. A summary not indictable.

That's interesting

And I think you may be right, in some ways casual may pass better then everyday type dressy.

I remember my first ma'am.

At the time, I was sitting in a deserted office/waiting room, reading a magazine, waiting for a friend to come out of her office and take us out clubbing. Heels, skirt, blouse and falsies. Make up and nails done. Hair fresh from the salon. It was my first complete and full day ever in broad daylight. I was already shaking with emotions and everything. I kept myself away from others, refused to let myself be talked to and so on, except in the Salon where they knew who and what I was. A day of living on the edge of fear. My legs were shaking, but that could have been the heels - first time in heels for longer than an hour. (I know though that I was so scared, it was the fear making them shake)

I was nearly reduced to complete and utter panic when a man walked into the office and sat down opposite me. Instantly, my bladder became full and I worried about weeing myself.

"Bonsoir, Madame!" he said pleasantly. Despite my panic, I was thrilled! "Bonsoir Monsieur" I replied and went back to my magazine, fearing any other conversation.

I didn't notice him checking me out in any extra special way, so I eventually relaxed.

Since then, maybe five or six times, I have had the "Ma'am" treatment, but I am getting older and lumpier nowadays - and 60-year-old pregnant women don't go unnoticed.

So I rarely venture out en femme these days.

But I treasure that moment in my secret treasure trove buried inside me.

Thanks for pulling it back out, Hypatia.

Remembering another moment my self.

I also remember the first time I got "Sir"ed. I was still in high school, and a very young boy asked me for direction. The "Sir" really threw me, and for more then one reason, I was not expecting it and it felt rather uncomfortable and confused. Sort of a negative moment for me , but not really bad.

Getting older my self, which is why I am not really trying. Lets hope we can both get a few more positive moments in.

Nice

I never get "ma'am"ed. They just "miss" me all the time.

Sorry for the pun.

My muse suffers from insomnia, and it keeps me up at night.

Attitude!

Hypatia Littlewings's picture

Well, I do have a bit of attitude, I am just not sure exactly what that attitude is though.

Yep!

I walked away grinning.
