Hampton Roads?
*wince*
I almost moved down there one time for a job but turned it down at the last moment because I just did not want to move down there. As it turned out, that was the best thing for me ultimately as jobs there in the tech field is not overly abundant.
Also, when I was looking through the apartment complex near the mall, one of the ground floor apartments had a bullet hole in the window 0_0! And yes, it is a navy town and touring around did not show an abundance of cultural inducements.
Well...
I reside in Richmond, and there is some stuff near you, if you like history with your culture. No, it isn't DC but Williamsburg is really good (and quite welcoming of sorts). Of course, I am involved in tRMN now and so I have friends who are from down that way (and they don't mind me at all)...

Hampton Roads....
My family and I lived in Virginia Beach and I worked in Norfolk and Portsmouth for nine years. Oddest thing I ever experienced was going to Yoder's Dairy in Chesapeake. As I paid for our sandwiches, a very petite young lady of decided Asian descent remarked, "Y'all come back now?"
