We're trying out a new distribution channel with our latest DopperPress release. It's called Draft2Digital and will make our books available on many different online sellers, including Amazon, Apple, SmashWords, Kobo and more!
We get a wider world footprint, more flexible pricing, more help with promotion and simpler uploading for eBooks as well as better potential for producing paperbacks and audio books.
We give up getting paid by Kindle for the Kindle Unlimited borrows of our books but only for our new releases in this new channel. :) That's not trivial, about 1/4 of our income from Kindle so far has been through the Kindle Unlimited offerings. For some of our books, we may keep the KU availability because it is kind of a good deal for readers, too. But Kobo and some of the other new distributors also offer subscriptions, so we will have to see.
Current plans are that all new releases will be in the new channel, and once or twice a month, we will re-release a book from our back catalog through D2D, possibly including paperback or audiobook versions.
It looks like new releases will not appear on Kindle quite as fast as when we released direct to Kindle but our newest book, Like for Like is already available on 5 to 7 other platforms!
Hugs,
Erin

Merger
I've been publishing with Smashwords for a number of years. They have recently merged with D2D, so when the convert my account the books I have on Smashwords will be available on D2D.
I think it's great news and end the end, I think we'll all be happier for the switch.

Interesting...
Please report on your experiences with D2D again in the future.
I was put off by their T's and C's (D2D is very different to the old Smashwords), but since you're taking the plunge, please let us know how it goes.

Will certainly try to do so
We took the plunge mostly because it was beginning to look just as risky to stay with only Amazon.
