Much as I've tried to keep a separate existence from myself (confusing enough), Lynda now has a Twitter account and a YouTube logon.

Unfortunately, twitter insisted I tie it to a physical phone number, which can trace back...

In the old days of the internet, it was much easier to juggle identities. Having two email addresses was child's play...

get a cheap pay as you go phone and number for twitter account. They'll want an address but no one will check it if you lie. Buy phone and minutes with a refillable American express gift card in Lynda's name. It won't stop a real investigation but blocks a simple reverse phone look-up.

Separate phone number

I got a Google Voice number, which is free for personal use and you can tie/forward to other phone numbers. It should work with Twitter...

Google Voice?

a case of out of the frying pan and into the fire?
or...
Twitter (and social media in general) or Google? Which is the most evil, spyware ridden org on the planet?

I heard this quote the other day on the radio.
"Google is not the answer to anything a sane person would want to know."

Someone speaking after my own heart.

Ack!

I had no idea Twitter required gettin' your phone number. I'd had a Twitter account years ago, but kinda lost interest, and stopped usin' it. Don't think I'll try reactivatin' my account if they're gonna make me give 'em my phone number.

Yeah, phone number is the new

Yeah, phone number is the new email. It's issued at some cost, usually, and it maps well to people. Mind you, FaceBook, which I've been denying that info for years, was recently caught selling or giving it to advertisers, in contravention of their promise. Google also wants you phone number, it's worth noting. But only twitter has progressed to requiring it. My ORIGINAL Twitter account doesn't have it, as that is an old account.

Good Thing

I'm old and retired and no longer give a damn if anyone knows I'm a crossdresser.

Mainly, what has happend is:

Texting you a verification number, that you then need to, input in to your account login, has become a standard part of, anti-bot, security, and account recovery.
Note, this means the number needs to be able to receive text messages, which usually means a cell phone.
Not that there isn't probably also interest in the tracking aspect of, needing to submitting a phone number.

Personally, I have lost accounts where they allow you to bypass adding a phone number, because I can not recover the account, since I did not add one. I have more then one, YouTube logon, just to keep separate histories of content.
