Feds say what North Carolina is doing is against the law that they set up. Telling Trans males and Trans female what restroom they can use. I feel that the States that do this are going to cause more trouble than they want to deal with. (Sexual Law Suits) will put those states in a hole they can't even dig out of.

When the US first became a
When the US first became a country, and the colonies first became states, the federal government was given 12 powers, all others were reserved for the people and the states. One of the federal government's powers is to oversee all of the states and to mediate all disputes between them (control of all interstate commerce/issues). It is the reason why one may always appeal a state court ruling to the federal courts. The US Constitution was the framework for all of the State Constitutions and the authority which granted the State Constitutions their rights and powers. Simply put, all laws/regulations/executive orders/etc ultimately derive their authority from the US Constitution, therefore any law/regulation/etc that violates or infringes upon the rights granted by the US Constitution is unconstitutional and has no legitimate power/authority. The enforcement of such a law through punishment or threat of punishment is by definition an act of terrorism (although I doubt the courts will ever rule the government guilty of such crimes).
While legislators and judges are protected from lawsuits directly, they are not protected from indirect suits. The state could sued for civil rights violations and one of the settlements could be the punishment of all legislators that voted to pass such a horrendous law(such as sanctions against them, like suspension or removal from office making them unable to perform their elected job). I think the best course of action would be class action civil suits(minimum of 3 people needed) suing the state for hundreds of millions of dollars in damages, temporary restraining orders to prevent the law from being enforced (with the end being removal from the books), and possibly holding the legislators and governor in 'breech of contract' demanding their immediate impeachment by the state. Law suits should be done by people affected by the State's law and done on the Federal level.

The feds are doing something
The feds are doing something that doesn't even need court action, they are going to cut all federal funding to the state as they are required to do under their own laws. Federal anti-discrimination laws prevent the federal government from giving money if it is knowingly going to violate laws to do so. Good old Title IX invoked, the longstanding threat getting dusted off and being shoved in the face to those idiots.
Basically the lawmakers just bankrupted the state. All federal funds pulled out. All federally funded projects grind to a halt. Parks close. The public colleges and universities shut down. Military bases stopping all purchases in-state. And the best part is there is nothing the state can do about it to get it to stop. Their only actual option is strike down or remove the law. Once people start losing their jobs over the boycotts and spending being moved out of state to neighboring states they will learn the hard reality of the situation.

The more 'redneck' part of the population already hate anything with the word 'Federal' in it. After all, why shouldn't they marry their 1st cousins????
What's to stop one or more states ceceeding from the Union? I'm sure in parts of the south there is a very large stock of Confederate flags just waiting to be unfurled.

Just what is happening
The southern united states depends more on the Federal Teat then the northern part does. Despite the number of 'conservatives' down there, they actually generate fewer tax dollars then they receive in entitlements so they are on the hook.
In my Humble Opinion...
I believe that the issue should be a state issue, however, that said, I believe that the TG community, should be protected. Religious bigots hate gays, TG, different races, so we can't make them like us.
That said, the constitution said all men are created equal, but did they really only meant White males? Or did they mean men as humankind, which includes Asians, Blacks, Gays, TGs, females, Hispanics? I'm not sure, since I wasn't there at the convention.
