Measurement conversions

Printer-friendly version

Forums:

I found a handy website earlier, easily convert any measurement into ALL appropriate systems.
Weight in pounds into all levels of metric, imperial and even includes stone.
distance, into smallest metric and longest metric or imperial.
( here is one I have seen used fairly often when a story has a battle with guns, 1500 meters is range to fire. hmm, an assault rifle can accurately hit a target at .96 miles? since when? try maybe 100 meters, just over 300 feet or 100 yards. )

the website:

http://convert-units.info/

And for Mac users,

That facility is built in to Koalacalc including such useful measures as furlongs, rods, the speed of light and the speed of sound. It's also a damned fine scientific calculator that can handle stats and solve expressions. I found it very useful when working with hectares and acres while trying to buy land in Italy. Don't ask, not everything works.

It's donation ware.

Barrett M107 50 cal rifle

The reported max range is 4000 m. Depending on conditions and the shooter, the max effective range is around 2000m (6562 ft.).

big difference

between a sniper rifle and an assault rifle.
try the max range for an m16, ar15, ak47. those are the types of weapons people use in melee assault.

The U.S. Adopted The Metric System

For what it's worth, the U.S. has adopted the metric system, only not exclusively. You'll find metric measurements on almost everything in the supermarket, in addition to the old English system.

Speaking of the old English system... Did you know that the English changed parts of their system after we adopted it? They no longer use the same system of liquid measure that we still use. U.S. gallons, quarts, pints, and even ounces, are entirely different than U.K. (Imperial) measures of the exact same names. For example, a U.S. pint is 16 ounces, totaling about 473 ml., whereas a U.K. pint is 20 somewhat smaller ounces that add up to about 568 ml. This actually boggled me (and sidetracked me into learning about the different systems) when I was reading some futuristic/dystopian English novel that complained that the new half-liter glasses were smaller than the old pints the protagonist was used to. After all, as an American, a half liter would be an improvement on our pint glasses!

And don't get me started on pounds. Between Troy, Avoirdupois, Tower, Merchant and London pounds, it's easy to see why the English embraced the kilogram. At least we mostly only have two of those to deal with, unless you're a coin collector trying to figure out what an old silver coin is equivalent to.

So, metric weights and measures are an officially-adopted system for commerce in the U.S., and it is a regulation that you'll find them on most packaged foods and beverages. But, except for hard liquor, you'll also find the old measures.

Do you remember what novel

Do you remember what novel that was with the beer glass scene. I definitely remember reading it.

There's an app for that

When I had only one gig of RAM I did my best to avoid having multiple tabs, or even my browser, open while I was writing. I found a program that works very well for me. It's called Convert (Catchy, huh?) and it has a wide range of units, plus the ability to add your own custom conversions. It works with all versions of Windows, plus Linux/Unix running Wine. Sorry, no Mac.

Hmmm...

I have absolutely no idea how...or why...I would even know this but... A .308 cal. or 7.62mm shot through a 24 inch barrel is standard fair for the 1000 yard shooting contest at Camp Perry? I believe that's where the Olympic shooting team is picked? And, too make matters even more mysterious, I think that in medium to heavy wind conditions they use a .300 Winchester Magnum and a 26 inch barrel. I must have seen a movie or something. Anyway, I believe that these are distances where accuracy is consistent.

Watcher of weird movies obviously...

but 1000 yd is less than 1000 m ( 1km )

dawnfyre's picture

1 meter is 1 1/3 yards.

stories talking about accurate shooting at 1500 meters just tickle my funny bone, since the weapons they describe using can't be accurate at that range.

oops

dawnfyre's picture

1 meter = 1 1/9 yards

my bad, didn't take the 3 feet into 1 yard into consideration when changing 1/3 of a foot into yards.

Not quite right

littlerocksilver's picture

A yard is 36 inches. A meter is approximately 39.37 inches. So, a meter is 1.094 yards. 1 1/3 yards would be 4 feet.

Shooting range

In a war, acurateness is rarely sought. That is what automatic fire is for. Fill the air with lead and some of it will hit... :-(

but

dawnfyre's picture

filling the air with lead when the target is beyond hitting range is just a complete waste of lead.

I normally just use Google or Chrome

The website you mentioned seems nice, but I learned to just type the conversion in the search bar of the Chrome browser, using the form "[number] SOME-UNITS in OTHER-UNITS". For example, "37 degrees C in F" or "200 US dollars in euros" or "50 miles in furlongs". Usually the converted value will appear on its own without having to hit enter.

For multiple conversions between the same units, I just type "SOME-UNITS in OTHER-UNITS" (e.g.,"miles in furlongs", and hit enter to get an input field where I can enter different values of one and see what they equal in the other.

I imagine other browsers have similar functionality.

Mile?

Just to further the confusion, the Swedish (or Scandinavian mile) is exactly 10 kilometres long!!

Measurements

I cannot believe that those who post here are not more concerned with brassiere measurement conversions!

I mean the difference between Goddess and Playtex? Big deal metric vs. imperial!

Think of the practical!

I guess not enough members need to convert the important measurements!
