The WNYC radio show "Radiolab" just did a fascinating show on gender identity - a very unusual kind of gender identity.

You can either listen on the web site or download an mp3 file. There does not appear to be a transcript available.
Do you think someone can "flip" genders on a frequent or infrequent basis?
Have you ever heard of this before of known anyone with it?
Do you agree that the subject is TG? Some gender experts think otherwise.
Do you think that the subject's choice to take estrogen, which seems to have stabilized her identity, was the right one?
And lastly, this being a venue full of creative writers, have you ever thought of this as a fiction device? Now that you've heard of it, do you see possibilities?
Kris
Of course
I've met someone who's gender changed on a day to day basis. They had a different name and a different pronoun that they expected you to use depending on which one they were. I believe it's called Gender Fluid.
You'd be surprised how many genders there are. (or lack thereof in the case of Agender :D)
I know who I am, I am me, and I like me ^^
Transgender, Gamer, Little, Princess, Therian and proud :D
Gender Fluid?
I've thought of that as a conscious choice to present as male or female at different times, perhaps reflecting an "in-between" gender identity. The subject of the podcast "flipped" uncontrollably. No ability to change at will, or to prevent a change, and very disturbed by the changes.
Bi-gendered, perhaps?

{I leave a trail of Kudos as I browse the site. Be careful where you step!}
Try not
To think of things in absolutes, Gender is a huge spectrum, within a spectrum, within a spectrum. There are literally more genders than can be counted.
I know who I am, I am me, and I like me ^^
Transgender, Gamer, Little, Princess, Therian and proud :D
Also of course
I must refer you to my story Daughters of Time (and the follow-up Tropical Twist) which, while not using an identical mechanism, uses the idea of gender-switching on a non-random basis.
I have used the idea in those stories of hormone patches as a means of either switching early or delaying or preventing a switch.

Maeryn wrote this one and it's like you describe. And it was a good tale too!
Wow
I've heard of gender fluid, but I never had heard of this abrupt switching.
Chesea, the people you've met, have any gone on estrogen (or T for a sometimes T2M) and had relief from this condition? Like the persyn in the story?
Very interesting!

Plenty
Of Non-cis people don't get surgery or hormones. The second gender fluid I met, said that they had two genders, Transgender, and Agender. And that they encompassed both at the same time. Pronouns were tricky but it was simply their gender was active at all times.
The person in question though I lost contact with. I don't know what happened to her or if he is okay.
I know who I am, I am me, and I like me ^^
Transgender, Gamer, Little, Princess, Therian and proud :D
I believe
this can also happen in some forms of schizophrenia where all sorts of things can be out of control.
Angharad
I don't know
That sounds kinda ableist. Most people I know that have Schizophrenia it had nothing to do with Gender. I'd need more research on the subject though.
I know who I am, I am me, and I like me ^^

if p then q
Angharad did not say that all people who have schizophrenia are also gender nonconformist. "Ableist" indeed.
You need to read more carefully in order to understand people properly.
not as think as i smart i am
