I am working on the next chapter but I need to do a bit of research on Spain. 1935-1945. I am looking forward to having a very interesting chapter to present in a few weeks.

Paula, your story of Angel

Paula, your story of Angel is fabulous. Researching the era you mentioned should also be very interesting as that is this mostly the period of the Spanish Civil War between Franco (assisted by the Hitler and the Nazis) and the Spanish Royalty. Had a close friend of my family's who fought in it, against Franco, but sadly he is dead many, many years now. Had a close Uncle, who also is now deceased, whose family roots are Basque and many of them fought against Spain, in general, for separation of their area from Spain. Looking forward to another interesting chapter soon Hugs, Janice Lynn

Si te dicen que caí

See if your library has a copy of it. It's subtitled in English, so you'll have to watch it. Your Spanish would have to be very good to put it on the background and listen. It's kind of a strange and sometimes hard to follow plot, but lots of early Franco era references.

Spain

The people of Spain had it really rough in the 30s and 40s. Politically there was no majority from a myriad of factions. You had the Fascists and clergy vs the communists, Republicans and the workers. There were hundreds of thousands of casualties on both sides. Freedom loving people were caught in the middle. The Spanish civil war pitted families versus families. Franco may have been the lesser of two bad things. One thing good Franco did was he kept the German Army out of Spain. Spain was awash of intrigue as both axis and allies operated there covertly during WWII. The French Resistance was present there and along with many Spaniards fought the Germans. Spain was a safe heaven for downed Allied pilots, who made their way south out of France. Stalin hated Spain and pressed the allies to invade through Spain. Roosevelt and Churchill rejected this. Spain was punished for not choosing sides worse than Italy and Germany in the recovery after the war (yes they didn't have the same level of destruction, but economically they were behind. In 46 they were still trying to recover from their own civil war).

That's an interesting...

period in Spanish history. First you have the civil war, then you have the years where Spain was "neutral" (more or less) and the "world" around them was at war. So many people there, from so man parts of the world... Fighting on all sides in the civil war. (I never did understand why they were called "civil" wars, as there was little civil about them.)

Much potential there for story lines. :-) Though, I can't quite see Angel visiting durring the time in question, withoug a magical guitar.

Enjoy your research!

If They Tell You I've Fallen...

Puddintane's picture

It's a Surrealist movie, heavy on symbolism and light on explanation.

I recommend Franco's Spain by Jean Grugel, although it's ten years old now, and/or Fascism in Spain, 1923-1977, a little more recent, by Stanley G. Payne. The first is more accessible, I think, but somewhat less comprehensive. The latter work is roughly three times the length.
