Sometime in the last few days, I noticed a change in the headers to the stories where time stamp now reads:
Owned by someoneorother on Fri, 2009/08/14 - 3:43pm.
instead of the more traditional:
Submitted by someoneorother on Fri, 2009/08/14 - 3:43pm.
Why the change?
Did anyone even notice that the new format is grammatically incorrect?
Someone no doubt will ask why I care. It is because when I happen to save a story, I make sure the header is included, so that I know when it was posted.
It just seems odd.

Owned by is grammatically correct.
Someone objected to submitted by when it is actually made by one of the staff.

Created by has the same problem as submitted by.
Not that I personally care, but the reason Erin made the change was because an author objected to having Title pages created for her by the staff and appearing to have been submitted by her.
The reason it was being created that way was so that although she did not create it, she would have the rights to modify it as she saw fit, which she would nothave had if it had been entered with the staff members name.
Erin, shanged the text to indicate that the document was owned by the author, which is different from necessarily having created it.

Standing alone, "Owned by" is correct, but in the context of:

there is an implication that at 10:51 am, it was owned by someone else, which is almost certainly not ever the case.
Okay, the explanations bring up another question. It used to be that when a story or episode was submitted by a third party - e.g. the last editor - that the "submitted by" was the person who actually posted the piece, and the author's name was the first item in the keywords list. Can we now reliably assume that the author's name will always be in the second line of the header?
Oh, and it just changed again for this reply. How is that decided?

Comments and stories
...are handled by different routines. I didn't change the declaration of comments because the situation is different. An editor cannot change the submitted by on a comment, and a commenter cannot edit a comment after it has been commented on.
Also, while an inference may be made from the phrasing, an implication requires intent, even if phrased in the passive voice. :)

Some Funny (Peculiar) People
From time to time magic fairies have improved my title blocks. They didn't ask me, but I am so grateful because what they did has always been an improvement.
On another occasion I asked Erin to fix a contents heading for me and it was done within minutes.
I just cannot understand why anybody would object to the services provided on this site, done as a courtesy to the authors, without any reward except the occasional "Thank You".

To be fair, the author in
To be fair, the author in question gave some very good and well thought out reasons why she was concerned with what had been done in her name. In this particular instance, it led Erin to a) changing this particular verbiage and b) adjusting a policy about creating author title pages.
The author was not being overly sensitive, or in any way wrong about her concerns. She simply brought up some real issues that Erin and her staff had not previously considered. They do a wonderful job, but can't always think of everything.
