Being a bit thick, I see in the new comments column that certain people are not verified. Any idea whhat this means?

Thanks

not verified

I think it means they have not signed up as a member, but just commenting on stories.

Seriously...

Puddintane's picture

...it means that they either haven't supplied a valid e-mail address when they signed up for a named account or haven't responded to the e-mail sent to the one they sent.

There are several reasons this might happen:

1. Typing error

2. Delivery problems

3. Obfuscation

Not Simplified

"Very" is an adverb used as an intensifier. A person who is "very" fied has moved from the state of being "simply" fied, through the condition of being fied, to the obviously higher plane of being verified.

Fied

And "fied," as we all know, is to have an odour which annoys a giant, especially if one is English.

Fee, Fie, Foh, Fum,
I smell the blood of an Englishman.
Be he alive, or be he dead,
I'll grind his bones to make my bread.

One presumes by this that giantism is an endocrine disorder which creates or exacerbates an intrinsic calcium and phosphorus deficiency, as there would otherwise be little need to make bread with ground bone meal, which has little nutritional value otherwise, aside for the marrow, of course, which is a source of fat and protein, but the marrow is usually extracted before the bones are ground for meal, as its retention greatly increases the likelihood that the resulting meal will putrefy.

But not to put too fine a point on it, being "verified" is a dangerous weakness in lands where giants prevail, and should encourage regular bathing and the use of deodorants.

Digni fied

Puddintane's picture

The term actually arose during in England in 1649, promulgated by the radical True Levelers, later called the Diggers, who advocated social and economic equality, as well as the overthrow of "the Norman Yoke" under which the English, Scots, Welsh, and eventually Irish were subjugated. Their scorn for the Norman nobility especially was legendary, to the extent that their very enmity became a badge of honour for the "Frenchies," who styled themselves "dignified" from then after.

The Digger ideals inspired a number of community activists over the years, amongst the most recent the Digger Theatre Collective in San Francisco, many of whose members eventually joined the San Francisco Mime Troupe and are producing street theatre to this day.

Here's their recipe for Digger Bread, which they made in metal coffee cans, along with a set of printed directions for making more bread and giving it away.

They ran the Free Kitchen, set up to really feed the homeless, where most "charities" seem designed to pay one of the spiritual heirs of the Norman nobility a princely salary and dribble a few crumbs to the poor, from time to time.
