For those of you who never saw him or Huntley and Brinkley deliver the news you do not know what a newsman is. Cronkite probably more then anyone else changed America's opinion on the Vietnam War. When he turned against it, much of the nation followed.

Yes, I was quite saddened by the news. I can remember when he took over from Douglas Edwards, so I am really showing my age here. The only thing I always felt he did wrong, concerning the VN war, was to make it look like the military was losing the war. Militarily, we had it won, politically, not so good. The tough part is that America was out of the country over 2 years, when the war was actually lost by the South Vietnamese. Well, those were and are different days, so we don't need to dwell on them any longer. J-Lynn
Too Young
I'm too young to recall much of his Vietnam coverage, although I've read accounts from both sides. The things that really stuck in my mind were his TV show, "The Twentieth Century", his coverage of manned space flight, and the broadcasts he made the day JFK was assassinated.
That group of reporters who got their start pre-TV covering WW2 for print and radio were cut from a different cloth than the talking heads these days. We will never see their likes again.

Walter Cronike also hosted an even better show then "The Twentieth Century". It was called "You Where There". It was a show that recreated historical events in the form of a news story. It was a great way to teach a history lesson and it was done in such a way that teens could understand what was happening.

I remember the space flight coverage well
He at CBS and McGee at NBC were my favorites as a kid, both were serious newsmen, whatever their personal beliefs and biases. McGee had this really cool model train layout to simulate rendezvous and docking during the later Gemini and Apollo flights.
Not these *entertainers* we too often get nowadays.' *Fair and Balanced TM*, MY A**, Sorry gang. Maybe it's just nostalgia but I do prefer the classic news presenters/reporters.

Blessed ignorance, be thankful dear.
Vietnam was awful for America. Those of us who served, often returned home in disgrace; being called baby killers, or spat on. (personal experience) I did not serve in country, perhaps because God had mercy on me; knowing that I had already done combat at home or something.
Now we are having a similar experience with Iraq, but this time those who experienced the trauma of Vietnam are trying to make sure that returning GI's is thanked for serving; knowing that if there is blame to be placed, it lies at the feet of our leaders.
I volunteer at the local VA Hospital, and often have contact with new returniees. I thank every one of them that I can. The other day, I ran into a Medic in full uniform who had been to Afghanistan three times I think. I thanked him and we had a long conversation about his service. He seemed to think that those words coming from a Muslimah carried special meaning.
Vietnam was awful for those who experienced it.

He Was A Legend That Will Never Be Duplicated
I remember watching him the last 8 years of his reign at CBS. Even I understood that he was a legend among all the newscasters of his era. I think I mentioned in my PM that I felt Dan Rather was not fit to even shine his shoes when he took over for him at his retirement. Journalists of this day and time spend more time creating news instead of reporting the facts. They are all the time telling us how we should think about an issue instead of putting the info out there and allowing the American people to make up their minds without putting a spin on it. They tend to intentionally leave information out if they are trying to push an agenda or viewpoint. Most of their reporting on Iraq and Afganistan has been very misleading. The soldiers on the ground know the real story on what is going on there. Their so called military experts have been way off the mark on several things. My brother has done two tours over in Iraq and he and his buddies would sit there in their barracks watching the news on Satellite. The "experts" would say that they were at a certain place doing a certain thing and they would just laugh their asses off at how wrong they were.
