Think I was just looking at that story the other day. Don't remember the title, but I can hopefully fill in a few more blanks. The Black Witch is married to a local King, the kingdom is Lyonnes, or similar. When the castle is overrun the witch/queen uses her final gasp of power to send her three children, one boy and two girls, to the outer reaches. The MC, the prince, is changed into a girl on the way.
The newly-minted Princess Lyons (sp?) turns out to have some of her mother's abilities. She winds up at the court of the high elvish king, where she is proclaimed the rightful heir and ruler of the defeated kingdom; as well as a sorceress qualified to be her mother's rightful successor. She's the one that goes to the old castle and learns things.
It also has the usual panoply of mythical characters, elves, orcs, dwarves, etc.
