Just watched Joss Whedon's film SERENITY again, his follow on from his tv series 'Firefly'.
If anyone here is a fan of them and doesn't know. Randalynn on BC has a fantastic follow on story from the film here
Connecting Flight

Firefly Series
Have the DVD set of the TV Series and truly not a fan. The reason I purchased the disks was because Randalynn wrote such an enticing story line about the series in her own way. Personally if she had been the script writer and director of the series it would have lasted for several years.
Using a sound set for a spaceship with enough wasted inside space to be the setting for some sports arena was bad enough. The acting was subpar as none of the plots congealed enough to be above high school acting drama.
As I said, Randalynn did an unbelievable job of writing an excellent SF story, taking a dog of a TV series and turning it into a truly interesting story.

Barbs,
Like all tv series you have good and bad episodes, but on the whole I liked the series. Did you see the film, or did the series put you off. The film was better and Randalynn's story follows straight on after the film's ending. I really wish that could have been made into a film.
Take care Oklahoma girl.

I am a leaf on the wind- ACKKKK!!
Connecting Flight and its sequel are absolutely BRILLIANT fanfic.
Not only for bringing Wash back in an interesting new form but for how
they continue the stories of the other characters in the post-Serenity 'verse.
River Tam slowly emerging from her shell, and even Jayne learning a bit of maturity,
building on these character's stories in ways that seemed totally true to the series and film.
Thank you Randalynn for giving us the continuation Firefly needed. Now, about Buffy...

I don't think Joss Whedon
could have written a better follow on to the film than Randalynn did. It's a shame really that they are not published as a book to get a wider readership.
Many of the stories I have read here on BC are far better written than the ones you can buy, and I'm not just thinking of the self published stories on kindle.

Doppler Press
Well, you can buy quite a few of the BC stories/novels on Amazon, published by Doppler Press. And some BC authors self-publish on Amazon, too (e.g. S.A.A. Calvert or The Morpheus Collective).
I think it was miscast.
It had potential but had bad vibes.
Agree totally
Yes, I loved Firefly and Serenity. I was disappointed that Joss Whedon didn't continue, but YES Randalynn's "Connecting Flight" filled the bill exactly.

Loved Connecting Flight!
I loved 'Connecting Flight' and the stories which followed it.
I've been a fan of Firefly since the series premiered. Serenity the Movie was a slight disappointment (I really was upsaet when Whedon killed off Wash at the end of the movie).
One other Serenity fanfic that I found and fell in love with (I printed it out and made the copy into a handmade/handbound hardcover book) was Archangel, written by someone called Badkarma00 (I think it still can be found on the internet if you use the title and author as the search). Very long, with a lot of character development of Jayne, River, and Kaylee.
Oh--and the comment about about the 'stadium-sized' interior of the ship. Serenity was a Firefly Class Freighter. Most of the action took place in the cargo hold. Biggest place inside a freighter. Most of the other rooms in the ship were kind of small (cockpit, galley, crew quarters).

As a Brownshirt conscriptee,
I love both Firefly and Serenity. The characters seemed more real somehow, opposed to the ones from another SciFi series, Star Trek.
Basically I guess Firefly and Serenity were grittier and a kind of blend of old west and scifi. There was real conflict between the crew members, usually settled by the Captain, sometimes via threat or physical means.
I thought the writing was on point for what the shows were intended to be and the characterizations mostly real to life although somewhat exaggerated for the purpose of making a watchable show. I felt for the losses and successes of each crew member and watched them become a crew from several different people thrown into contact with one another by chance.
Incidentally, Grover wrote a MAU story which combined Star Wars, MAU, Star Trek, the Marvel universe and Firefly/Serenity and did a damned fine job at it IMHO.
Randalyn did a wonderful job with her continuation of the Firefly/Serenity series and developed the characters very well indeed. I love them as much as the original series.

Thank you all!
I really enjoyed writing the Firefly fan fictions, and I'm halfway through the next chapter (if I ever get back to finishing all of the things that are waiting for me to finish them). *grin* I also was working on a Doctor Who/Firefly crossover, featuring the tenth Doctor and Donna Noble. I really want to get back to everything soon ... maybe I'll let your words push me! *smile*
Much love,
