No-one knows how Devil's Hollow (which I can see part of from my front porch) got its name. I even asked at the Kentucky History Museum*. Here's one explanation:

Here in Arkansas we have a place called "Hell's Half Acre"

It's out in Hot Springs, and people aren't allowed to go up to it any more (though folks sometimes sneak through the barriers anyway.)

Nobody knows what causes it, but it's a section on the side of one of the hills there that is completely barren of any living life, with open steam vents, and stays several degrees warmer than any of the surrounding area. It's kinda freaky.

The world is full of strange places.
