I'm looking for a story how about I believe John Carter and Mars. It starts off for the relative (I believe a nephew) coming to read the journals of relative (I believe a uncle), about his fantastic life on another planet, there is something about running into aliens and is put into an arena to fight, heard about one of these aliens helping him but she keeps getting branded for making mistakes. There is also a princess handsome bad people chasing them around.

If anybody has any ideas please let me know and thank you so much.

Two more

Melanie Brown's "Another Martian Princess", and Amber Lynn Kain's unfinished Daughter of Mars.

I have not read the latter, because it is unfinished.

I have

Read that book, can't place the exact title though I think it's something like Warrior of Mars.
If I remember i'll check my library when I get home.

Yes, but

I believe the OP was well aware of that.

What's being looked for is a fanfic, as it were, a sequelesque work dealing with a nephew/niece who reads John Carter's journals and then somehow is transported in a manner similar to him to a similar setting.

So, most clearly not by ERB Himself.

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the work being sought.

The summary that the original poster gave is an exact description of A Princess of Mars

Au Contraire

LibraryGeek's picture

The OP stated that it was about a nephew who started reading his uncle's journals concerning his adventures on another world.

That did not occur in A Princess of Mars.
No relatives of John Carter had experienced anything like that prior to himself, he did not read of a relative having such experiences.
Thus, not an exact description of A Princess of Mars.

Also, IIRC John Carter did not fight in an arena in A Princess of Mars, nor have someone assist him who kept getting branded for making mistakes.

That the MC of the unidentified story went on to have similar experiences, well, like, Duh! It's a bleeding Fanfic, after all!

I know

I know that I have read the work they are looking for and I believe it is one of a Fanfic series but do nat remember the title or author I am currently digging through my non shelved older books and getting them properly organized so I hope to find it eventually only about 5,000 or so books to go through so it could be a while just added new shelves to my library so have room for them now but have been collecting books for a long time.

Oh!

I see the confusion! You didn't read the forward to A Princess of Mars. The forward is by Jack Carter's nephew (Edgar Rice Burroughs, keeping the illusion alive), who has discovered his uncles memoirs after his mysterious death. It's written on some kind of meta level, so we're to understand that we're reading along with the nephew, who wasn't supposed to look at the papers until 11 years after Jack's death, and snuck a peak.

(You also recall incorrectly, in chapter 19 Carter has been captured and fights for his freedom in an arena, gladiator style)

Nope

In that foreward

Carter is said to be called 'UNCLE JACK' by the youngster Burroughs, not that Carter was actually a blood relation to the 1861 Virginian Burroughs family.

My first recollection of Captain Carter is of the few months he spent at my father's home in Virginia, just prior to the opening of the civil war. I was then a child of but five years, yet I well remember the tall, dark, smooth-faced, athletic man whom I called Uncle Jack.

Quote is the 2nd paragraph of the 'FOREWORD' to "A Princess Of Mars" by Edgar Rice Burroughs

ED: The title is a link is to the free HTML Novel offering from 'The Project Gutenberg' of the E. R. Burroughs Novel.

"REMEMBER, No matter where you go, There you are."

*sigh*

Further in the text he says,

I had always been his favorite among the younger generation of Carters and so I hastened to comply with his demand.

Burroughs is pretty clearly his nephew
