This is just not good when the term "Tranny" is now morphing to encompass drag queens.
I realise that to many of the general public we all come from the same pot but it was my perception in recent years the public was becoming better informed and that they had some understanding of the differences. I believe even transvestites would take some humbrage at being lumped in with drag queens.
If it appears I am making disparraging remarks about drag queens, I am not, I am sensetive about misuse of terms.

Shows you how dumb I was as a kid! I thought a "Tranny" was the box behind the engine on the tractor, that you shifted to go forward and reverse.

I heard the term 'tranny', used for transvestites,including drag queens, more than 30 years before I heard and understood , or maybe even, before I even heard, the term 'Transgender'.
San Francisco had, as many large cities did, public nightclubs/theaters for drag shows, and 'tranny' was the general term used, either neutrally or in derogation, for the cross dressers who performed or attended. Finnochio's in San Francisco was a tourist attraction for tourists who wanted to have something edgy to talk about, ( or maybe, just think about ), when the went home.

My roommate is a drag queen, but if someone even tries to imply that he is trans-anything he throws a fit- as do many of the other drag queens around my area. Of course, he's also of the mind that MtF TSs who like men are just gay guys who hate themselves, something we have argued about frequently.

New distinctions
The division of everybody into groups - "trans" -gender, -vestite and -sexual, cross-dressers, homosexual, etc. is a fairly recent occurrence. When I was young, most anybody that now falls into those categories were "queer" or "tranny", depending. So long before it had any of the current connotations that your roomie objects to, tranny would have been a common semi-derogatory term applied to him. So he should save his fits for something that matters, and politely correct the person who misspoke.

It's one thing for your roommate to define himself, Melanie. If he's "not trans-anything"
he's not trans-anything. He just likes sequins and long gloves and eye makeup by the
gallon. But it's quite a different matter when he deigns to define every transwoman
on Earth in light of some half-baked sophomoric political b.s. he is parroting!
Oh, your reality is mistaken. Here's what you REALLY are! It's dangerous,
when some young t.s. person hears nonsense like this & decides it's more
"logical" than what she feels. This is happened to me years ago, so I
tend to get a bit irate when I hear it spouted like some fucking gospel...

It's pretty annoying. Really the worst part is that he doesn't respect my choice not to date or have sex until I have completed transition.
You would think a gay guy would be the last person to try and claim 'you are wrong for feeling this way' but I guess it just goes to show.
