Just out of random curiousity

Just wondering if I am the only one who obsessively checks their stories and blog posts for comments and such?

Every time I post a story or comment, I seem to take on a compulsive need to keep checking how many people have read it, what comments have been made and if people are giving any indication of liking it. Am I the only person who is weird like that, or is it a common phenomena that I have weirdly adapted anyways?

Comments

not uncommon

dawnfyre's picture

for people to check on their new postings for the first week after it was posted. After a week views and comments really drop off on stories, blog posts usually a day afterwards.

once the comments / kudos / views stop jumping up checking each posting frequently isn't needed.

Stupidity is a capital offense. A summary not indictable.

I have to say that nothing makes me feel better, or more appreciated, than when an author reviews my comment and periodically even responds back.

By design

A lot of the design of BC is toward making authors feel appreciated. People who write for an audience need the right kinds of feedback. It's not a perfect system here but we tweak it now and then to try to improve it.

Just to remind people about MyStories

This link will take you to a page listing all of your stories, with columns for which ones have new comments, kudo and read counts, even for unpubbed stories: MyStories.

Most of the columns are sortable.

Majority

I suspect you and I are in the majority. But checking often makes me feel, I have an insecurity problem.

Perhaps not quite an insecurity problem

but in this world of social media, there are many who seem to keep checking on their tweets etc. I call them an 'attention whore'.
Social Media gives instant gratification and also instant rejection/dismissal. This site is not that bad. You have to search for responses rather than get them sent to you.[1]
I check my posts here quite often in the day or so after posting but once the level of kudos has plateaued I tend to reduce that checking to once a day at most.

[1] Perhaps this is why I don't subscribe to any of the Social Media sites. no twitter, Facebook etc. I've never felt the need to expose myself like that.
I have no idea what is posted (if anything is or anyone could be bovvered to post) about me on those cesspits and to use some infamous words,

"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damm".

It would be strange

if an author didn't do that. Why publish if you don't care whether others read it?

I'd guess that your actions are the norm rather than the exception.

twitches randomly

I write for Kudos! or 'reads' numbers!

My muse beats me up for them and will not let me sleep on some nights---she counts them constantly and writes answers to comments....its all her fault!

I am a kudos addict!
but takes 'reads' in-place of them.

Obsessive Compulsive

All of the above! When I (too rarely) post a story then I have to check (a) how many hits I get, (b) how many kudos I get, and (c) how many and what kind of comments I get.

I think any author likes to bask in a little admiration, no matter how little.

Nope

No you're not alone, I too probably check way more often than I should for new comments.

two or three

Or four or five or . . . A day isn't obsessive . . .

Is it? :-)
