I knew there were variations in sizing but this ridiculous!
I do not know how anyone manages to shop successfully for clothing online(or by mail), unless you are buying more of an item you already have. Wearing a combination of both male and female clothing, I have items that fit me properly ranged form size S all the way to size XXXL. To break it down a bit more, my male clothing items run from S to XL, and the female ones run from M to XXXL. lol
Gee, is this typical, or have I run into rare extremes?
While annoying it is also kind of funny.

That's a bit harsh, don't you think? A clothier doesn't have control over how their clothing is tagged, unless they hand make it themselves.

My clothing sizes usually run from XS to M at the largest. How comes your sizes run so much into the extremes?

I'm afraid that sizes are
I'm afraid that sizes are very rarely the same between manufacturers let alone between countries. I've bought shirts made in China from two different Australian companies, one a 2XL and one a 4XL and both fit me exactly the same. Pants are even worse. I have a pair of 117cm waist pants that fit like a pair of 127cm waist pants, pants that haven't been shrunk by me at that.
It frustrates the hell outta me, why can't clothes be the same measurements worldwide? Because then companies would lose out on what they think is theirs by right. Hence why I'm trying to learn how to make my own clothes.
Even worse
My partner bought a top recently in a 14 petite (UK sizing) and decided to buy another in a different colour. When we got the second one home and compared, it was at least 2" slimmer round the bust and about 1.5" shorter. Same model, just different colours. It's going back.
I have a theory I call the "bin theory". This is that, in those far-east sweatshops all these clothes are made in, there is a bin beside the sewing machines which contains all the labels which go in the garments. Now since most of the locals can't read English, they just pick out a label at random and sew it in.
Now tell me you have a better theory!

my issue is a bit different
since I shop in the 'teen queen' shops, their XS is just a bit big on me.
at 5' 9" and 130 lbs I shouldn't be fitting that tiny.

I was looking for clothes and found some that I like, and went up to really large sizes, then I found the size chart. The largest a 5XL was for a 40.5" (103 cm). I am significantly larger than that, and normally buy a Large to 2XL sized clothes.
It is all relative
I've found that sizes depends on which market the clothes are intended for. When I buy clothes in the US, I've noticed that sizes are generally larger than clothes in Europe. A large in the US is normally equal to XL or 2XL in europe. If you are shopping online, the shops often have a conversion table which gives you the corresponding sizes in cm or inches, try to meassure some of the clothes that fits you, and use those numbers instead of s,m,l.

That maybe a significant part of the problem, both online shops and discount type stores carrying items meant for other markets.

Different designer have different standards
I had trouble understanding why my sister loved Old Navy clothes but I could never find clothes that fit me well. Then I saw this chart for the New York Times and it made more sense. Designers have different standards for the same size. They even have different standard between their own lines.
