A friend posted something about folks using pics to try to blackmail people online.
She was mainly aiming at the Littles community, but it applies to many of us here. If you aren't willing to post the pic publicly, you might not want to send it to someone you don't know really well.
Also, a warning for the under 18 folks. Sending nude pics to someone can get *you* busted for producing and distributing child pornography. It's happened to teens in several states.
And by busted, I don't mean merely charged, but *convicted*.
As I recall, under federal law it only takes possession of *three* (might be five, but I think it's three) mages or videos to count as possession with intent to distribute.
And even if they are pics of yourself, that's still "producing".
Yes, given the purported reason for the child porn laws, going after a teenager (especially one 16 or 17) for pics of themselves that they made of their own free will is *insane*.
But then again calling it "child" pornography was just a dodge to get it passed anyway.
So, lets be careful out there.

there is software that can embed executables in image files, usualy a trojan downloader.

Fortunately, that requires you to use Windows default image viewer. Microsoft made a *really* bad decision back in the early days and doesn't want the hassles that come of fixing it.
They decided that since *some* users are idiots, they'd check the "header" on as file to determine what to do with it, rather than use the extension.
That does protect you from things like one of the executive secretaries using a ".exe" extension for executive committee meeting notes. (really happened at one company I did computer support for)
But it opened up the whole world of "hiding" executables under the extensions of "harmless" files.
It didn't help that Outlook used to "helpfully" automatically open attachments.
But if your default image viewer is some third party program, then you are probably safe.
Having a good antivirus and anti-malware program helps too.

Doubly Insane, is that these teens taking selfies, or even having consensual sex with other teens(ignoring other moral implications) get labeled as "Sex Offenders" if "busted", and then for the rest of their lives everyone assumes they attacked someone sexually. Also, imagine if they actually caught everyone, the numbers would be insane and the system over whelmed. That usually means there is something wrong about a law or at least the way it is written.
Stresses the "don't share" thing goes for a lot of other stuff then the example cited.
A few in particular come to mind on this site. Don't do it, don't share it, unless it is something you want out there.
That includes stupid online nicknames too. Watch out who connects them to your RL self.

The sex offender lists are a bad joke.
Guys have gotten on them for pissing on the side of a building while drunk.
Then there was the kid with some mental problem (basically still childlike in his teens and later) who got on the list because he didn't know not to masturbate in public.
Ok, that's not *too* unreasonable. What was *completely* unreasonable was that after the family moved to a new town (because of work) the locals (including the local *sheriff* who could have had the details if he'd bothered to check) saw the "kid" (now in his 20s, but still mentally around 5 or 6) on the sex offenders list and started harassing the hell out of the family and in particular this child-like man.
He didn't understand why everyone was being so mean to him and committed suicide.
Also, the restrictions on folks on the lists get more than a bit unreasonable. I know someone who is on the list in this state. They aren't a danger to anyone any more. But they had to move with less than 30 days notice. Why? Because the lady next door was going to start a daycare in her home.
And then there were the week plus of ads on a local station about their big story on all these sex offenders living within (I think it was 2 miles) of schools, playgrounds, etc.
Carefully never mentioning the fact that one of the criteria for *siting* elementary schools is to try to keep them no more than a mile or two from
potential students.
While there are people who need to be on such a list, most don't and being on the list constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. It's basicly a life sentence as a third class (at best) citizen.
But nobody wants to have to explain why an offender *wasn't* on such a list, so they make them overly inclusive.

are NOT always for life, it depends on the level (local, state, federal) and the severity, like any crime. it is still many years, and in some cases is pretty stupid, they need to have some leeway so judges/juries can allow teens, not ones actually selling, but selfies, etc to "friends" are not put on the list, fine charge them with whatever, fine, etc, but as someone who is DEATH on REAL sex offenders, of all types, i think it has gone off the edge of reason.

A boy in his teens sent a nude photo to a girl he was chatting to. So far so good, they were ok with each other. BUT she sent it to her friends and soon it was around school. The head found out and called in the police.
The boy, not the girl, was threatened with prosecution for distributing porn.
The boy while not prosecuted NOW has a Police record. The family can ask for it to be removed, but it is up to the Police to decide if they will (in this case it seems likely).
It just shows that once sent someone else can drop you in it when THEY re-distribute it.

I learned *that* lesson back in the 80s.
I'd been using Usenet for several years when Dejanews went online. It was a searchable archive of all Usenet newsgroup posts.
So I went and did a search on my ID (an email address that has long since gone away).
The first page of results was evenly split between posts to comp.sys.ibm.pc and alt.sex.bondage. Oops.
Ever since I've maintained several online IDs. One for my tech stuff and "public" things, one for my TG stuff, one for my really kinky stff, and one for my SCA stuff.
It's still possible to track me down, but it's no longer a matter of plugging an address into a search engine.

to keep in mind is that pictures seem to be one of those things that the internet never forgets. It might not be the best idea to send a pic you don't want to see again ten years later.

All it takes to be busted for child pornography is to have one picture of any one under 18 nude or in a sexy posse. The cops don't care if its just of your self and it will cost you a lot of money in court with a over 99% chance you will lose. My sisters son and wife was babysitting a little girl, she did not want to go to bed so he picked her up with hands under the arms but his fingers were on her chest. he spent a year in jail and on the list now. The parents of the girl did not know he was in jail for a week and was shocked by the pic some one took and they did not see a thing wrong with the way he picked her up as every one does it that way. The law says you can't touch a kid on the chest or between the legs. That's the reason I stop being a nanny, as anyone that's wants to get you just need to wait till you do some thing like that.
