He ran into the street this morning and got hit by a pickup truck. He didn't suffer. We're all overwhelmed right now. Mrs. D. and my son got him from a rescue shelter to help me deal with my own issues. I can't imagine a more precious soul; loyal and loving. And now? I don't know. Part of me never wants another dog and part of me can't imagine life without one. He's one of the best friends I ever had. Sorry, but you understand, right?

Another Dog

Another Dog may not completely fill the hole left by Harley's death but you could be giving a better life for another rescue animal. Especially if you do it for Harley's love for you.

I'm so sorry, dear one

You remember how torn up I was when Cosette passed, so you know I understand. We both know that Harley was family, because that how we feel about the people we share our lives with. *soft hugs* And Harley was people, and in your heart, always will be.

Hold your memories of her tight, and if you can, bring a new family member into your home. The love you have to share needs to be shared, and the love you receive in return will help you remember Harley in so many ways.

*soft loving hug*

Much love, my sister,

Randa

Losing a loved one is painful

I've lost dogs and cats to accidents and to old age.

Drea, I know that it feels like someone could never fill your heart again. Give yourself some time to remember Harvey and to miss him. Someone will come along that you will care about again. No one will ever really replace Harvey, but you will find somebody who will love you just as much.

Dogs, they say, are one of the things that made us human.

And bless them, they still have work to do.

I gave my dog a hug for Harley and here are some for you.

Hugs,

I totally understand

wish I could give you a huggle in person, but online will have to do

Best Friends

I'm so sorry for your loss.

For some strange reason I was thinking yesterday about how incredibly sad I was when one of our dogs died. I suppose it has to do with how much I love our springer spaniel -- and how I dread to think how few years he has left with us.

My spouse and I have a running gag about me being the "mechanical arm". We both read an article years ago that "proved" that dogs become just as attached to a mechanical arm that dispenses treats as they are to a human. I don't believe it for a minute, but it keeps me grounded when our dog does something that can only be described as unconditional love.

You'll know when it's the right time to fill the void in your life.

This is so difficult to deal with. Get well quickly, and find another creature who accepts unconditional love. Harley will never be replaced, but there is another homeless creature critter out there that will thrive with all the love you give. Bless you.

So sorry...

Ive lost pets over the years and I know how you feel. Pets are quite literally, family.

So sorry

So sorry about your loss. It's rough losing a dog, pet, or all-around friend. Especially when it's so sudden. Even after having many wonderful years with them, it's still sad to see them go.

I feel your pain

We lost two beloved cats this year. One to complications of old age and a far younger one to cancer/massive infection.

The pain will faid with time.

There are so many deserving animals in shelters that need a good home.

Take time to grieve then dedicate yourself to helping these poor animals. Either by adopting one or by volunteering at a shelter.

A time to greive

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

It's understandable that you'll need a time to grieve. A connection with a pet is deep and meaningful. And as with any relationship, when death robs us of it, we need to grieve. Now is not the time to decide on whether to get another dog. Go through the grieving process and then, when the wound isn't so fresh, consider the option.

Regardless, you'll always have a spot in your heart marked, "Harley."

Please accept my condolences.

Hugs
Patricia

I feel your loss

Having felt that loss myself, I know how you grieve. Don't feel that you must close your heart because of this. Know that your heart is big enough to love another while still keeping Harley held comfortably in his special place within it.

One day, you will be reunited.

Although I grew up with both dogs and cats.....

I never developed that kind of an attachment to any of them. Probably due to being too buried in my own little universe and hiding myself from me and the rest of the world.

Having said that, I do know what it is like to lose someone you love, someone who had special meaning to you, someone who gave unselfishly of themselves and of their love. I know that pain, and I know that it takes a lot to fill the void that the loss creates.

I don't know if another dog would help. How do replace a loved one? Or is replacing Harley what you really want to do? Can you replace him? Or do you move on keeping his memories fresh, while finding another special friend who will always be there for you?

They say time heals all wounds. In my experience it does not; but what it does do is give you space and perspective. Personally, I couldn't imagine replacing the people I have lost, but I have found others to help fill the emptiness in my heart.

I would suggest that you could do the same.

I hope that you find that special friend to do so.
