AFFECT is correct. Except in expressions like, "effect a change", EFFECT is the noun, and AFFECT is the verb. How does THIS affect THAT? What is the effect of THIS on THAT? (Sometimes AFFECT, but accent on the first syllable, is a noun as well, but the meaning is unrelated.)

Effect is active, meaning it causes something to happen. Affect is passive, meaning it is a reaction to events.

Well, maybe the German 'Affe' and the English 'affection' are not as far apart in meaning as I first thought. I do remember at age of about 12 - 13 making monkey shines at girls to whom I happened to feel some affection?
