Where can I find more Whately Academy stories? Are there more? Thanks JC

Where Whately

erin's picture
Yup, Sapphire has all of the Whately stories, so far, I think. They'll be going up here as I can. I actually got them first but me being in the middle of a personal crisis, Sapphire posted them before I did. :) That's one of the reasons for debuting the new TopShelf software, so people don't have to wait on me. - Erin

Thanks

Okay I loked and found this 'Fey' http://www.sapphireplace.com/stories/finson/fey01.html is that it or are there more? I tried the goole search but it didn't come up with any results at all. Sorry to pester but I've got the block m'self and can't write. JC added later - okay I do need to learn to read the rest of the page before asking stoopid question... :-(

plain text?

Hi Nice to see activity again. I saw a brief flurry with the Wiki thing but couldn't work out how to see new additions, now on this new site I'm still not sure how to see _all_ the stories I've missed since a certain date, but at least I see the most recent. On the old site you had 'printer friendly' versions so we could download plain text files for reading on pda's etc, but I can't see the equivalent on here. Is there one? Val xx

Print friendly

erin's picture
There isn't a print firendly method yet, but I'll work one out eventually or someone else will and I'll use theirs. :) Right now the categories column is your guide to past publications but there will be other ways of finding things soon. :) - Erin

Well, that answers the question I was going to ask...

First off let me say that this is a MAJOR improvement over the Wiki version that was sampled awhile ago. I was going to ask if there was any other ways to sort stories by since the the "browse archives" does'nt seem to be up yet but that's already been answered. ^_^ I'll just take a reading break for awhile until the dust settles here and all the search stuff gets put in and just pickup where I left off over on the Classic site. This way I'll avoid my feedback disappearing or getting fustrated trying to find stuff. -_^

Tweaking still going on

erin's picture
Lots of things to do here and features to install. :) Don't anybody hesitate telling me what they want to see. What I'd like to see is more people posting their own stories and more people commenting on stories. :) - Erin

Deleting

Just accidentally posted twice, and can't see how to delete one. The edit option has let me change it to this though... Can we delete posts made unintentionally? Val xx

Deleting

erin's picture
Apparently not. Sorry about that. Editing it to show that it's redundant seems to be the limit of control I can give easily. I'll look into it. - Erin

Whateley Stories

Yes, Sapphire has them all so far. I am also working on getting them posted here, and will eventually get it done. Apologies for the wait all. Be patient with me here and they, along with the Heaven and Hell tales, will get here. I promise!

New Stories

How or where can I determine when Big Closet posts new stories? I can not find an appropriate link that reflects new stories.

Newest stories

erin's picture

The TopShelf page IS the new story page. Newest stories are always on the front page of the TopShelf, and always nearest the top, below any announcements I have made, that way you don't have to go looking for them. Also, clicking on a date on the calendar in the right hand column will show you the stories posted on a particular date.

BigCloset isn't organized just like all the other sites, just as none of them are organized quite like each other. BigCloset/TopShelf is organized as a portal specializing in TG fiction.

Problem posting story.

JulieO has authorized me to post some of her stories here, and I have twice tried to post her latest, "Shock to the System." Both times I have filled out the form, pasted in the story, and pressed the "Preview" button. There is a longish pause, the window goes blank, and then my browser freezes. I'm using the iCab browser for Mac, with Java and Javascript enabled, and have not had previous problems with PHP based systems, including the old Big Closet. The file I was pasting in was a straight text file, and it showed up perfectly in the entry window.

If worse comes to worst, I suppose I can try using Netscape, but I'd rather not.

Any idea what the problem could be?

iCab blues

erin's picture

I spent about an hour trying to get iCab to work. I had it installed before and it seemed to work fine but that version expired. The new version just keeps telling me I'm not authorised to visit that website and would I like to download the latest iCab.

So, at this point I'm not able to say why iCab might have problems with the input screens on BC. However, I have a few questions,

how long is the story?

is it broken into lines or are the paragraphs allowed to flow?

Because if you had a VERY long story, like over 200k and all the lines were separate lines, the filter I'm using on input might take a very long time to deal with it.

Answers to your questions.

>how long is the story?

The text file is 148 K, short by JulieO standards. ;-)

>is it broken into lines or are the paragraphs allowed to flow?

There are no line breaks except for blank lines between paragraphs. It's essentially the same file that is posted at FM, with a few minor edits.

I guess I'll see what I can do with Netscape.

Thanks for trying,

Amelia

iCAB vs TopShelf -2-

erin's picture

The file posted at FM would have line breaks, that's one of the things done there to make the stories ready for publication, but I undersrand you, the file you SENT them didn't have line breaks.

Well, 148k is a bit big bit we already have bigger stories posted here. The software will manage tings up into the ludicrous range as far as being able to save and deleiver the text.

The other thing I can think of is that maybe iCAB has a JAVA problem, since the little filter doohickey is partly in JAVA.

If ypu're still having problems, email it to me and I'll post it.

Field Promotion

I've upgraded your account to Editor since you are posting stories for other people. :)

Thanks, Chief!

Thanks for the promotion, I hope I can live up to it.

As you can see, the story posted just fine using Netscape. I even edited in some formatting for the synopsis and headers.

Now, how do you feel about hosting the newly revised, edited, and mildly expanded version of Julie O's "The Scholarship"? And, if you want it, do you want it whole (approx. 1259 K in text), in 3 parts (as at FM), or in 14 (as at StorySite)? Want it spread over time to ease bandwidth issues?

Hugs!

Wanda's perfectionism gets in the way. The first draft was done early last year but the final version has not yet been approved to appear on the site. Sorry.
