Sorry guys
The New layout sucks on ipad.
Asla

that's a function of your

that's a function of your browser more than anything else. it displays fine in opera mobile; i'm pretty sure it's available for iOS, you could try that.

Not a lot of information there

What is the problem? I have an iPad and while the new layout is not ideal on a tablet, it is certainly better than the old oneto me. If you have specific complaints, we might be able to address them but saying, "This sucks" is not going to get much action from us. :)

BC on iPad using Safari

Rhona McCloud's picture

This is a problem that has happened twice before with the content of the side columns (except adverts) migrating to the bottom of the page.

I PM'd Piper a couple of days ago and have just PM'd Erin so fingers crossed and be reassured it is a problem that I'm sure they will try and remedy not a badly designed new layout

Rhona McCloud

That's designed that way

The side cols migrate to the bottom when the display is not wide enough to hold everything. What problems is the migration causing? We've ameliorated some people's problems with this by adding menu links to the top (Login/Logout and Navigation).

We've had years of complaints that BC did not work well on phones and tablets and this is an attempt at the solution. We have not had many new complaints.

Mobile? Websites

I use my browser to go to the standard (nonmobile) website. Everything displays just fine on my Galaxy Tab 10.1. I haven't had any problems using the normal URL on any website, it's only when using the so-called "mobile" versions that things go wonky. BTW, I don't use the mobile versions on my Galaxy S5 either. Both are running on Android.

Mobile versions

The theme we are running detects your display size and adjusts based on that, it isn't a separate mobile version. We do seem to have found a couple of bugs in how the theme looks on some devices and are working on trying to fix that.

One problem is that Piper is very ill with a severe cold and an ear infection. A second problem is that she does not have an iPad. But we will work on this problem as we can.

Eh?

Are you saying that cold and ear infections can be cured by using iPads?

That's terrible! Don't tell Apple, for heck's sake!

We hope she gets better soon!

As for the mobile layout, here are my thoughts on it....

Is the layout shifting the sidebars to the bottom as convenient for navigation as the standard desktop one? That's debatable. But, is it EASIER TO SEE on my phone? Absolutely!

The way the site's layout defaults for mobile devices is designed to make the best use of screen real estate for the functions that the most users will use, that is to say, it is optimized for the finding and reading of stories. Resolution aside, most mobile device screens are small enough that even for someone with better-than-average eyesight, like me, reading on them can be a chore (tablets less so than smartphones, but still.) The way the site currently handles this works quite well to make reading on the site easy and simple, even on my device's relatively small 4.5 inch screen. There is no need to do any horizontal scrolling or resizing, and it ends up being much like reading a plaintext document, which is, very convenient.

Yes, it means that the front page loses quick access to the most recent blogs and comments. Yes, it means that an author's complete list of stories is now shunted to the very end of your current story (though that is rarely a problem since you'll want to finish what you're reading before moving on to begin with.) But these are small prices to pay for an easier reading experience in general.

Navigation and Login/Logout links in top menus

erin's picture

The right most links in the two menus in the purple area at the top of the page are there to help avoid having to scroll down to reach things. Also, the other menu items there can take you to the blogs, forums, solos and author listings, among other things. We are still tuning how all this works but we will get it right eventually. :) It took a bit over a year the last time we did a major update to get things working the way we wanted them to, as much as possible. :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Melanie.

Yes, but

There is an option in my browser to display desktop sites, that works very well. I have also purged the dreaded letter "M" from all the links in my bookmarks, and very few try to comeback. BC is one site that is saved under the standard www-bigclosetr-us that hasn't attempted to override my choices and use the 'mobile' display. I always get the three column display, even on my cellphone. DeviantART is another example. At first it kept trying to move me to the mobile format, but after I bookmarked my page and removed the 'm' then I get the normal display everytime. So whatever is 'supposed' to happen, doesn't.

BC in iPhone

Melanie Brown's picture

I seldom get on BC on my iPhone any more. Before I could resize the page to fit perfectly for pleasant reading. Now I can't seem to shrink the text to a smaller size to get more text on the screen. I tried a different browser, but as it reformats to screen size, that didn't help at all. Plus, I have to scroll all the way to the bottom to sign in, then scroll all the way back up and everything appears in a narrow, wrapped window. Before I had total control over how I viewed the page, but now I have no control. So now I just wait until evenings to get on with my PC.

You don't have to scroll down, you can login with the login button at the top.

We will have solutions for most of these problems, it just takes time. :)
