Transgender Rights and Health, British Columbia, Canada.

The first province to grant rights to the LGBT community, a decade before the Canadian Government did so.
The first Government to recognize same sex marriages in Canada.

in 1998, a trans woman was informed she could NOT use the ladies washroom, by the operators of a Lesbian bar. She sued them for sexual discrimination under the Human Rights code of BC. in 1999 the BC Supreme court ruled in her favour, setting the legal precedent that it is sexual discrimination to exclude a trans person because of their gender identity.

The BC Ministry of Health discontinued treatment / support for transitioning in 2000, yet has adopted the latest wpath care standard now and funds breast augmentation and gender reassignment surgery for the trans woman.
They do fund the bottom surgery for the trans male, and I think they fund the hysterectomy for them, as well as the bilateral mastectomy.

With the Government being so forward on these issues, there is actually a fairly large impact on how society in general treats trans people.
In general, being trans is not an issue, 90% of the time anyone speaking to or about you will use the gender pronouns for the gender you are presenting/ transitioning to.
The other 10%, those are the immature/insecure kids, or the Neanderthal types that can't deal with anything different, With the addition of those elderly persons that have not had much to do with anyone different and never had those antiquated attitudes challenged.

Tuesday afternoon last week, nice hot sunny summer afternoon, I managed to get one dirty old man to rethink his actions, I'm pretty sure he soiled himself when the pretty woman he went to try to pick up turned out to be a tranny. ;)

Tranny

A word that can confuse. At the risk of being too personal, I do not consider myself a tranny (though I have been called it a lot) but a woman. I reserve the word for transvestites/crossdressers. Bev Taff of this parish talks interestingly about her gender fluidity, and that is something different again, and there are perceptions by some here that the TS are seen as somehow superior to the CD people*.

So, there lies the question: was the dirty old man in question trying to pick up someone who is a woman with an unusual history, or a man who likes dresses?

*I have said it many, many times here, but it bears repeating. I have no disdain for crossdressers, Each to their own, as long as it doesn't frighten the horses or harm anyone. In my case, I simply do not 'get', grok it. It doesn't speak to me. It's like football or golf in that sense. I understand that it means a lot to others, but I personally don't connect with it.

I never wanted to wear particular clothes, I wanted to be in the position where wearing them was a normal thing for me.

Tranny is a device in a car

I also get excited and more than a little irritated being grouped as 'transgender' I think that although this has given other transsexuals a lot of benefits... I am a woman. I am not trans anything. I've bought a couple they are very expensive!

I do not want transgender rights for me. I want women's rights for everyone who wants that.

I have been 'living as a woman' for 25 years now. There is no trans in my life.

Dayna.

ps. I never cared much for the clothes either. I was all about the being a woman and wearing the clothes that were proper and very attractive for women and their men or all men depending on how slutty I was feeling a the time *laugh*

true it can confuse

I am in transition, been wearing womens clothing only since 1995.

an d the dirty old man was looking to pick up a woman in a dress, from his shock and the speed he left at. [ I wasn't wearing any cosmetics so the facial hair wasn't completely hidden. :/ ]

Stupidity is a capital offense. A summary not indictable.

Thank you!

I live in BC when I read this I jumped onto the links and googled for the dr's paperwork and I'm ready soon as I can round up the fees to get it filed.

you could have asked, I could have put the links into a reply ;)

and in case you didn't find it:
http://transhealth.vch.ca/ is an info site from Coast Health that can help you find the services in your area.

I'm in New Westminster, so it's actually close for me to go to their offices, at 3 Bridges clinic at Hornby and Drake in Vancouver.
